Mission Statement

The Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance intertwines and connects all facets of the fiber arts community.  Open to anyone with an interest in fiber, yarn, fabric, or textiles, SEFAA celebrates, supports, promotes, and perpetuates all fiber art forms. We do so by offering classes, workshops, tours, open studio hours, events, and exhibitions as well as rental space for fiber-related events and studio artists.

The SEFAA Center (opened in 2011) provides a unique, regional fiber arts resource. Since 2010, we have offered over 86 classes and workshops, 32 fiber-related events, and 15 fiber art exhibitions. Our e-newsletter goes out monthly to over 2,000, providing information about regional events, exhibitions, and calls for entry. Our Center is regularly rented for fiber-related meetings and events. Our membership (individuals and organizations) continues to grow.

SEFAA offers seminars, classes, workshops, and tours covering all aspects of the fiber arts.  Our goal is to offer programming that is difficult to find elsewhere and/or that crosses technique boundaries and to bring in national and international instructors.

Fiber Art Exhibitions

Informal exhibitions (non-juried and pop-up) at the SEFAA Center plus formal exhibitions (juried and curated) at other regional venues. Our annual informal exhibition is the Square Foot Fiber Art Pin Up Show, which is free and open to everyone. Regular juried exhibitions include Spotlight on Student Fiber Trends in even years and Intertwined: Contemporary Southeastern Fiber Art in odd years.

  1. What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
    The Southeast Fiber Arts Alliance (SEFAA) cultivates a vibrant fiber arts community that preserves tradition while encouraging innovation. We do so by:

    • Providing diverse and comprehensive fiber art programming,
    • Inspiring and supporting fiber artists, organizations, businesses and educators,
    • Connecting the fiber arts community,
    • Promoting the fiber arts, and
    • Encouraging public understanding and appreciation of the fiber arts.

    Our vision is a Southeast where fiber arts are understood, appreciated, and enjoyed.
  2. What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
    SEFAA's programming provides a multitude of avenues to experience, explore, practice, and promote the fiber arts. It also supports and intertwines our community, encouraging and facilitating interactions among all factions.

    • Classes and workshops covering a wide-range of fiber art topics and that often cross discipline boundaries fills a void in available programming offered through single-discipline organizations, suppliers, and educators. For example, Warping Fast & Weaving Smart with Laura Fry, attended by Berry College students and Japanese Patterns and Textures in Soywax/Beeswax, an intensive batik workshop for dyers, surface designers, and quilters.
    • Exhibitions expand opportunities for fiber artists since galleries representing and promoting the fiber arts and suitable exhibition space are often difficult to find. Regular SEFAA exhibitions include Spotlight on Student Fiber Trends, Intertwined, and our Square Foot Fiber Art Pin-Up Show.
    • Tours expand horizons for those on the tour while increasing the impact and exposure of the artists and venues being toured. Recent tours include Oscar de la Renta at the newly opened SCAD FASH museum and Iris van Herpen at the High Museum (on Dec. 4, 2015).
    • Events provide support and exposure for artists, organizations, and fiber arts in general and help build community. Examples include our Fiber Flea Market, Artists' Sale, Open House, and Lunchtime Fiber.
    • Rentals of the SEFAA Center provide low-cost, centrally-located, functional, and well-lit facilities for fiber organizations who are generally without permanent venues.
    • Studio space provides exposure for our resident artist while providing community support and affordable working space.
  3. What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
    SEFAA is a small, all-volunteer organization that does amazing things with minimal resources. We do so by constantly expanding our volunteer network, partnering with our member organizations and other non profits, and carefully watching every penny that we spend. Our Board of Directors is experienced and committed and successfully manages every aspect of SEFAA's operations. What we don't know, we find out and when we can't afford something, we get creative or live without. In a word, our most valuable asset is our people. Their passion for fiber arts guides and drives us.
  4. How will they know if they are making progress?
    Happy, satisfied, energized participants are the best measure of program success. So, we ask our participants to complete a standard evaluation form which asks:

    • Did this class/workshop/event meet your needs and expectations?
    • Would you recommend this class/workshop/event to others?
    • Would you recommend this instructor to others?
    • Was the site appropriate for the class/workshop/event?
    • Was the length of time appropriate for the class/workshop/event?
    • What did you like most about the class/workshop/event?
    • What did you like least about the class/workshop/event?
    • What changes would you make to this class/workshop/event to make it better?
    • What did you learn today that you are most likely to try?
    • What topic(s) and/or instructors(s) would you like SEFAA to offer/hire in the future?

    Forms are reviewed after each program and comments are shared with the Board, volunteers, and instructors as appropriate. If participants include their name on their evaluation form, we respond to their comments and suggestions to let them know we heard them. This quote from Molly E., one of our 2012 Artists' Sale participants, illustrates this: "Thanks for asking for input, and listening to it without defensiveness! A very rare quality!" We listen to our participants, we learn from our programming successes and our mistakes, and we move forward.

    At our monthly board meetings and periodic board retreats, we share successes and failures and, as necessary, re-evaluate and adjust our programming strategy. This has led to several programming changes, including more focus on workshops with nationally-known instructors and less on short introductory, single-topic classes; an increased push to partner with other organizations, particularly our member organizations, to host and publicize classes and events; and a change from quarterly to monthly Members' Meetings.

    We also track program success from a financial perspective, monitoring income and expenses and budget versus actual numbers for all programs - education, exhibitions, events, and rentals - as well as memberships and sponsorships on monthly and year-to-date bases. Education, rentals, and memberships together account for nearly 85 percent of our income, so our overall program success is particularly dependent on good stewardship in those three areas. This year, we will begin evaluating our programming using a Matrix Map to eliminate any low-mission, low-profitability programming.
  5. What have and haven't they accomplished so far?
    Have accomplished: Opening a regional fiber arts center, saving up 4.65 months of reserves, operating in the black every year, establishing a varied and successful slate of programming, creating an open, ethical, and responsive organization, improving communication and cooperation in our community, improving knowledge and appreciation of fiber arts through exhibitions and outreach events.

    Haven't accomplished: Hiring our first employee, complete migration to SalesForce for customer data management, website updates, increasing program participation, receiving a Georgia Council for the Arts grant.

We are currently actively working to lower the median age of our members by establishing connections with college students - making student memberships only $10/year, sponsoring a biennial juried student exhibition with $1,600 in prizes, and establishing a scholarship fund so that students can attend SEFAA workshops they wouldn't otherwise be able to afford. We fully recognize that they are the future! Our programming is open to everyone regardless of race, sex, sexual orientation, and/or disability. The majority of our current programming is for 16 years and older. Art camps and classes for younger people are planned for the future.
