Overview

Self-reported by organization

The Thomas Cole National Historic Site (TCNHS) is the home of Thomas Cole (1801-1848), founder of America’s first major art movement, now known as the Hudson River School. The historic site includes the Federal-era Main House (c. 1815), Cole's "Old Studio" (1839), a visitor center, and park-like grounds of five acres overlooking the Catskill Mountains. The TCNHS pursues its educational mission by offering guided tours, both permanent and special exhibitions, publications, website programs, hands-on activities for school groups, lectures, and innovative public programs such as the Hudson River School Art Trail – a richly researched program of both guided and self-guided hikes that enable visitors to see the spectacular nearby Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountain landscapes that Cole painted. For the last seven years, the TCNHS has organized and presented annual loan exhibitions of Hudson River School paintings, each with a printed catalogue, and each year on a different artist or theme, providing the visitor with a first-hand experience with the art movement that Cole is credited with launching. Permanent exhibitions at the site were greatly enhanced in 2009 through a grant from the NEH to create an orientation kiosk, a film for the visitor center, thematic displays of collection objects, and interactive computer programs available both on-site and online (www.explorethomascole.org). To explore topics in greater depth, each year the TCNHS presents a robust program of lectures featuring top scholars in the fields of art history and related fields. The goal of these and all programs at the TCNHS is to create a learning environment where visitors can find meaning and inspiration in Thomas Cole’s life and work. The themes that Cole explored in his art and writings – such as landscape preservation, and our conception of nature as a restorative power – are both historic and timely, providing the opportunity to connect to audiences with insights that are highly relevant to their own lives.

STATEMENT FROM THE Principal Officer

"The TCNHS is the only institution dedicated to the art and life of Thomas Cole; therefore an opportunity exists to serve the worldwide interest in the artist and the art movement he launched. With Cole’s paintings scattered all over the United States, the idea was hatched in 2006 to create a virtual space where people could learn and explore his artworks. The project came to fruition with a grant from the NEH, and the online “Learning Portal” went live in 2009 at www.explorethomascole.org. The program consists of three “pathways” for learning. The first is an “Interactive Tour” which leads visitors through 16 major Cole paintings with a tremendous amount of information organized into "Decode It," "Compare It," "Locate It," "Cole's Process," and "Cole's Words."  The “Virtual Gallery” module presents 150 thumbnails of Cole paintings that are zoom-able and searchable by date, subject matter, location depicted, and keyword. "Cole's Landscapes" allows the user to explore Cole's sketching and painting sites. The website has received enormously positive feedback, and we intend to continue to increase the number of Cole artworks that are included. The TCNHS also launched a new home website in 2009 at www.thomascole.org which includes interactive features to engage audiences: streaming of our new 15-minute film about Cole and his creative process, a Flash presentation that tells the Thomas Cole story in bullet form in under a minute, a new online shop with unique merchandise, a “Landscape” blog with behind-the-scenes information, an easy way for visitors to donate online or join our membership, and a “guestbook” feature that enables visitor feedback, such as post-lecture discussions."
