Mission Statement

The Central Valley Holocaust Educators' Network supports teachers in effectively implementing a Holocaust curriculum that meets California Social Studies and Language Arts Standards. With an understanding of the constraints that teachers face, CVHEN helps them respond to a variety of challenges this complex curriculum presents. We offer ongoing follow-up training and resources that build upon the foundation laid by acclaimed programs that offer Holocaust education seminars.

CVHEN workshops have been attended by more than 200 educators from various Sacramento area schools. These teachers will reach approximately 8,000 students each year (200 x 40 students/yr = 8,000). The number of students impacted increases exponentially for each year that the teachers continue teaching the Holocaust curriculum. Teachers may come to the trainings from a particular school district or from a variety of districts in Northern and Central California. Typically, a training session accommodates 20 to 30 participants. Attendance is voluntary, and there is no charge to attend.

CVHEN has also established a speakers’ bureau of adult children of Holocaust survivors in anticipation of the loss of their parents in the near future. These “2nd Gen” children of survivors will give voice to their families’ personal experiences in classroom and civic group presentations helping the audience make a personal connection to this history. They also assist in the teacher training workshops with research and critiques for classroom presentations.

To expand the number of teacher trainers, CVHEN has a Fellowship Program that identifies experienced Holocaust educators for extra training to become effective participants in future CVHEN programs. The Fellowship requires an in-depth research project, preparing original lessons, participating in collaborative sessions and keeping a journal of reflections, questions, comments and suggestions.

Lessons of the Holocaust

Holocaust education has been required in California for grades 7 through 12 since 1985. Teaching the lessons of the Holocaust to middle and high school students is a daunting and difficult task. How should you approach it? Where do you start? Many teachers search for help in implementing the Holocaust curriculum in their classrooms because of the difficulty of teaching this complex period of history, as well as the lessons of personal responsibility, civic involvement and ethical decision making.
The Central Valley Holocaust Educators’ Network (CVHEN) is the only organization in the country exclusively dedicated to supporting teachers in effectively implementing a Holocaust curriculum that can help students comprehend the roots and ramifications of prejudice, the dangers of apathy, and the fragility of democracy. The proper teaching of the lessons of the Holocaust instills a sense of personal responsibility for promoting and preserving pluralism.
CVHEN's teacher training workshops include four three-hour interactive sessions, one in-depth follow-up workshop based on teachers' requests, and a lesson-sharing-critique workshop.
The initial 12-hours cover presention and discussion of the major events leading to the Holocaust and its perpetuation; modeling a variety of instructions strategies that will engage students and connect the lessons of the Holocaust to their lives. All instruction correlates to California Common Core Standards. Instructional materials are provided by the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and recommended resources, e.g., websites, DVD's, etc.
Numerous approaches are presented that can engage diverse groups of students in critical analysis of the history of the Holocaust, creating opportunities to connect the powerful lessons of the Holocaust with their own lives. CVHEN’s unique skills-building methodology challenges teachers to submit themselves to a learning process equivalent to the experience they will provide for their students. Critical thinking exercises prepare participants for developing lesson plans that address key questions and concepts.

Each session includes small and/or large group discussions to clarify ideas and to reflect on choices. Some of the topics covered include: Why study the Holocaust?; The Anatomy of Prejudice; The Role of Propaganda; Rescue and Resistance; and From Collaboration to Complicity. A variety of activities allow teachers to experience and evaluate resources and methods they can use in their classrooms.
Teachers seeking to broaden and deepen their knowledge and understanding may attend our in-depth theme-specific workshops, such as Children of the Holocaust, Resistance and Beyond Anne Frank. Special Lesson-Sharing workshops give teachers opportunities to share their experiences and work in a collegial open environment. Teachers find the exchange of ideas, peer input and opportunities for collaboration rewarding and encouraging, promoting collaboration on future projects.

BIO

Liz is an retired veteran educator for the Elk Grove Unified School District. She helped create Sacramento's Shalom School and has taught every grade level from preschool to graduate school. Liz, together with her mother, survived Nazi persecution by escaping from a ghetto in Poland. They walked from Poland across Czechoslovakia to Hungary where they hid until the end of the war. Liz has shared her story with students and teachers hoping to promote understanding of the Holocaust and tolerance.

"We believe that teaching about the Holocaust can help students understand the roots and ramifications of prejudice, the dangers of apathy and the fragility of democracy, and can instill a sense of personal responsibility for promoting and preserving diversity.

We recognize that teaching the full content and broad implications of a Holocaust curriculum requires teachers to adjust their pedagogy to the needs of their students and the realities of their classrooms.
