Overview

Self-reported by organization

Fourteen MilSpeak Creative Writing Seminars (MCWS) have been held at Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, South Carolina.
MilSpeak Books, the foundation's nonprofit press, produced 12 creative works written by military people. Through the foundation's Sied Books program, more than 2000 downloads of MilSpeak Books titles have been gifted to deployed military members, wounded warriors, disabled veterans, and their family members.
Seven volumes of MilSpeak Memo (literary magazine) have been published since January 2009. Memo is available free online to all readers at the foundation website.

MilSpeak Foundation has nominated twelve works by military people for the Pushcart Prize. MilSpeak Books nominated The Westering by Korean War Veteran Tom Sheehan, author of more than 200 cowboy stories, several collections of poetry, and other works, for the National Book Award.
MilSpeak Foundation has operated with less than a thousand dollars a year.
MilSpeak Foundation is maturing into an organization that creates community among military people in the arts, and thus provides support, mentorship, and networking for a community whose contributions to American Arts are often overlooked and undervalued. Just knowing that another military person has successfully navigated the Odyssean obstacles of military life can build enough hope for someone who wants to give up to continue. Sometimes solutions to seemingly insurmountable problems are found in the writing and art these military freely share with each other, and in conversations generated by sharing in the Arts.

Funding Needs

MilSpeak Foundation growth has overrun volunteer staff! We need donations to build infrastructure and to staff key positions within the organization.   More importantly, we need to fund programs such as Readers for Troops, which seeks to provide eBook readers to Veterans Administration and military hospitals.
