Mission Statement

The Mission of the Underground Railroad Society of Cass County is to provide a focal point for exploration into the origins and activities of the Underground Railroad; the unique role the people of Cass County and the surrounding region played throughout its exsistance, and how it impacted local, state and national history.

 

The Goals of URSCC are 1) Preserve and restore the James E. Bonine House and Carriage House as outstanding examples of Victorian architecture. 

2) Create a learning center and community meeting house as the focal point for understanding the role Quaker, African-American and other abolitionist communities played in the Underground Railroad.  3) Create a cultural tourism destination for Underground Railroad enthusiasts that will bring visitors and tourism dollare into the community.

2010-2013 Major Accomplishments

--Received our 501c3 status 6/30/10

--Designed and created brochure, letterhead etc for URSCC

--Partnered with the Village of Vandalia for "Underground Railroad Days" Festival in its 4th year

--Created "Cass County UGRR Site Driving Tour" that highlights ten UGRR related sites in Calvin and Penn Townships, the Village of Vandalia and the Village of Cassopolis, MI.  Will expand to 15 sites in 2013

--Designed and created www.urscc.org(http://www.urscc.org)  that gives an overall view of UGRR activities in this area, and includes a downloadable driving tour

--Purchased the James E. Bonine House and Carriage House  12/29/10
--repaired and restored sw corner of Bonine House 2011
-- restored mansard roof on entrance tower of Bonine House 2012
--received Evans Award from Michigan Architectural Foundation 2012
--re roofed entire Bonine House 2013
--created two powerpoints on the UGRR in Cass County as well as the Legacy of the Bonine House, and show them to groups throughout the region

 

2013 Goals

--complete plaster and painting of interior of Bonine House and complete structural and masonry repairs to the foundation and outside of home. 
--fundraise $150k to restore porches and implement plans for gardens and landscaping at the Bonine House
--create a cd and dvd to implement the UGRR Site Driving Tour 
--begin talks on Carriage House restoration 
--list the Bonine House and Carriage House on National Register of Historic Places
--list URSCC on Michigan Freedom Trail and National Network to Freedom
--research and apply for foundation grants and other awards
--expand the content of Underground Railroad Days to add a Civil War component, as well as other activities, and pursue funding for these activities
