How does this organization make a difference?

Overview

Self-reported by organization

Annually the Literacy Council helps between 50 and 100 adults and their families meet their individual goals for literacy.  Fundraising focuses on an "Anyule Spellin' Bee" that brings the community together for supper and to support locally sponsored teams.  Funding provides books, materials, and general support for volunteer tutors and students.  We would like to increase our number of volunteers and students served.

Program 1

Tutoring

The Literacy Council offers both volunteer opportunities and client services.

Our program trains and support volunteers to become effective tutors.
Monthly average number of volunteers is 90; average number of clients is 60.

Recently hired part-time staff have redesigned the brochure, revamped  developed an active webpage, increased email communication, the database, and reached out to partner with the comunity college.  All of these elements increase our outreach and strengthen our program delivery.

STATEMENT FROM THE Principal Officer

"The Literacy Council is affliated with ProLiteracy, a worldwide literacy advocate.  In Carroll County, we work with other service agencies to identify and serve adults who cannot read well, who are working toward a GED, or who are speakers of other languages.  Our trained volunteers are dedicated to helping others and commit 1-2 hours per week to tutoring.  At a time of economic stress, reading and writing skills are especially important in finding and keeping jobs.  Because our services are completely confidential, we do not receive government funding."
