How does this organization make a difference?

Overview

Self-reported by organization

In 2012, the Society dedicated the new research library that connected the existing museum and auditorium and provided a secure area to house the collection.  Numerous educational programs were offered, including lectures, special exhibits and scout and school programs.  A speaker's bureau was established and the Society has been taking historical programs out into the community.

Much work still needs to be done with our collection, and we hope to be able to hire at least a part-time curator in 2013.

Principal Officer

Kathy Creighton

BIO

Ms. Creighton has a BA from Western Illinois University in Political Science and History, with graduate work in history.  Prior to coming to BCHS, she spent two years with Cincinnati Museum Center, 26 years with the Illinois Department of Agriculture as an Administrative Assistant, and 5 years with the Governor's Office.  She also served many years as a volunteer with Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site in Petersburg, IL and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, IL.

STATEMENT FROM THE Principal Officer

"Community outreach and collection preservation are the areas we need to continue to grow in.  Our speaker's bureau, in its first partial year of operation, has presented over 20 programs throughout the county and requests continue to come in.  I would like to see this expand into the schools and we are working to develop programs aimed specifically in introducing students to the rich history of southwest Ohio.

The BCHS currently has a large collection pertaining to both the history of southwest Ohio and the Victorian era.  Work needs to be done to ensure that the items donated to the society are properly stored and/or repaired as necessary.  We desperately need at least a part-time person who can focus on this area and funding for both this person and the necessary supplies needed to carry the work forward.  There are numerous paintings that need to be cleaned and repaired, photographs and documents that need to be digitally preserved and I would love to be able to get our collection on line so that researchers can use our collection from their home."
