ARCS Scholar Awards

The ARCS San Diego Chapter raises scholarship funds annually from our members, other individuals, corporations and foundations. We award ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of these funds as scholarships. In 2010-2011, we will award $355,000 to 48 outstanding scholars (two $15,000 Scholar Awards, , thirty-eight $7,500 Graduate Scholar Awards, eight $5,000 Graduate Scholar Awards, and one $5,000 Undergraduate Scholar Award) at San Diego State University, The Kellogg School of Science and Technology at The Scripps Research Institute, the University of California, San Diego, including Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science at the University of San Diego.
In addition to raising funds, the major event of the year is the Scientist of the Year Dinner in the spring, where an outstanding scientist is honored. Past recipients of this award include Nobel Laureate Francis H. C. Crick, Nobel Laureate Gerald M. Edelman, Dr. Floyd E. Bloom, Dr. Sally K. Ride, Dr. Irwin Jacobs, and Dr. Dean Ornish, to name a few. The 2010 ARCS Scientist of the Year was Dr. J. Craig Venter, Founder, Chairman and President of the J. Craig Venter Institute.
A number of scientific field trips are also organized throughout the year to keep members current on scientific developments and to further acquaint the community with this worthy organization.
