Overview

Self-reported by organization

In 2009-10, GENI continued to research and educate about the urgency for renewable energy while expanding our reach on the internet and laying the foundation for GENI's next project, the World Resources Simulation Center. Here are the highlights from last year:*Two notable intern papers were completed and sent to relevant decision makers. Renewable Energy Potential of Tribal Lands was sent out to 90 Tribal leaders in the U.S., and, Renewable Energy Potential of China, was sent to 230 Chinese leaders.*GENI had a record high of over 430,000 unique visitors to its website www.geni.org. GENI was awarded a Google AdWords Grant worth $12,000.00 a month which will significantly increase GENI's visibility on the web.*GENI was honored when Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Mohammad Yunus, endorsed GENI's ongoing initiatives.2011 promises to be a very important year for us as these projects are implemented:*GENI has moved into our new space in the Westgate Hotel complex -- just across from City Hall. This facility enables us to deepen and accelerate the uptake of renewable energy resources domestically and internationally.*In our new space we have created a immersive visualization, collaborative environment where we can now do the work of the World Resources Simulation Center on a limited scale. Using the comprehensive anticipatory design science method we can test and further refine the processes of the Center. This demonstration facility will lay the foundation for funding the full scale center.*GENI is launching a new on-line endeavor called the Village Projects website this year. An introductory website has been launched and the full operational website is in the works. The Village Projects Website will be a clearinghouse for information on current projects from the poorest countries in the world engaged in rural electrification, poverty alleviation and social entrepreneurism with an emphasizes on energy efficiency and clean electricity.

Program 1

Global Energy Network Institute

GENI's mission is to educate world leaders and the public about the critical viability of the interconnection of electric power networks between nations and continents, with an emphasis on tapping abundant renewable energy resources, what we call 'the GENI Initiative.' Research shows that linking renewables between all nations will mollify conflicts, grow economies and increase the quality of life and health for all. This is a strategy developed by Dr. Buckminster Fuller three decades ago. We conduct research and educational activities related to the international and inter-regional transmission of electricity, with a specific emphasis on tapping abundant local and remote renewable energy resources. With the increased awareness of climate change, growing energy demand, renewable resource solutions and smart technology over the past 3 years, GENI's strategic position and activities have expanded as well.

Program 2

World Resources Simulation Center

The core mission of the World Resources Simulation Center (WRSC) is to accelerate regional and global sustainability. To achieve this, the WRSC will provide an immersive visualization facility where decision makers gain insights, see trends, and view scenarios options for the future so they may make sustainable decisions and act on them faster. The WRSC will provide the models and visual tools to plan effectively for all of our environmental challenges. For example, computer-generated maps, graphs, and data will help planners address large scale renewable energy generation and eco-friendly transit. Equally important and related to climate change, the WRSC can also provide alternatives for dealing with the mounting shortages in fresh water supply and aquifer depletion.Ultimately, the measured impact of the WRSC will be in the policies, practices and agreements that come as a result of the facilitated events with stakeholders and decision makers.

Funding Needs

By supporting GENI, you can help accelerate the development of renewable energy and address water issues on a regional, national, and global level. GENI projects will provide smarter tools to address a number of other mounting environmental issues. * We seek full-time marketing staff to invite planners, business leaders and policy-makers into our new space -- a place where we can visualize and really grapple with the challenges of our society. * GENI is seeking an additional $395,000 (over 2 years) in order for the WRSC to be fully staffed as an ongoing demonstration as we begin hosting collaborative planning events This will cover increased rent, salaries, and IT equipment, so that we can begin doing the work of the World Resources Simulation Center. * Because much depends on the technical capabilities of the center, GENI must hire a Systems Administrator to set up and maintain the technical equipment, databases, software and networks necessary for WRSC operations. * New workstations and servers are needed for the WRSC to display the layered data that decision makers will use to visualize current data, trends, and scenario options for the future.* GENI's newest project, Village Projects, is seeking a Project Manager and has budgeted $45,000 for their salary.

Principal Officer

Mr. Peter Meisen

BIO

Mr. Meisen is a graduate (1976) of the University of California, San Diego with an Applied Mechanics and Engineering Sciences degree. In 1983, he co-founded SHARE (Self Help and Resource Exchange), which became North America's largest private food distribution program, and served more than a million people each month in the U.S., Mexico and Guatemala. With 20 years in the energy field, he is an internationally recognized speaker on the global issues of renewable energy, transmission and distribution of electricity, quality of life and its relationship to electricity, the environment and sustainable development.

STATEMENT FROM THE Principal Officer

"For 25 years, the Global Energy Network Institute (GENI) has focused on a clean energy strategy for all nations. Today, many countries have the agenda of "linking renewable energy resources" as a priority. And it goes much deeper, as this strategy offers multiple social benefits: reducing pollution from fossil fuels and nuclear waste; reducing poverty and hunger; stabilizing population growth; increasing trade and cooperation between neighbor nations. We have been honored with the endorsement of 7 Nobel Peace Laureates and especially proud of Walter Cronkite's support, who stated "the GENI Initiative offers the most thoughtful strategy towards peace and sustainable development that I have seen." As the green economy has taken hold, we are blessed with dozens of very bright, committed interns from around the world who want to make a difference in this area. Yet with all the current awareness on clean energy, wind/solar/geothermal supply just 4% of global electricity, but has the potential to power 100% of our needs. We see the need to accelerate the process. There are also numerous other issues: water shortages, transport congestion, disease migration, fishery loss, population growth. To address this need, we're developing Bucky Fuller's proposed World Resources Simulation Center -- an immersive visualization facility where leaders are educated and gain insights, see trends and scenarios of future options, and can then make more sustainable choices and act on them more quickly. "
