Monarch is committed to academic excellence and addressing any challenges to a student’s academic success. Programming provides students one-on-one tutoring as well as specialized instructors in math and literacy. Monarch is accredited by Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Social & Emotional Growth

Social and emotional learning is an integral part of education at Monarch. Social Growth programs include student clubs and events, athletics, performing arts and wellness education that encourage community and social development. Emotional Growth programs include student support advocates, therapeutic and counseling services, family assistance and basic needs with the goal to help students gain awareness of their emotions and practice positive behaviors.

Life Skills

Life Skills programming provides students with the support they need to successfully transition from school to postsecondary life including college, career and life management. Programming includes life skills curriculum and coaching, college preparation, career readiness training, financial support for postsecondary education and alumni support of basic needs.

    The mission of Monarch School is to educate students impacted by homelessness and to help them develop hope for a future with the necessary skills and experiences for personal success.
  2. What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
    Monarch recognizes that additional school services are needed to properly assist homeless students. Monarch addresses the barriers these students face by providing support services and programs that are not available at other schools.

    After ensuring we meet our students' basic needs and they recognize Monarch as a safe and supportive environment, the Monarch team is committed to serving all the learning needs of students to promote their future success.

    Monarch accomplishes its mission by providing comprehensive student services to support learning in our four pillars of student growth. Our pillar objectives include:

    • Academic: Build the foundation of knowledge necessary for success
    • Social: Keep students engaged in learning and provide opportunities to explore passions
    • Emotional: Help students become aware of their emotions and develop healthy coping skills
    • Life Skills: Develop skills that lead to self-sufficient living
  3. What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
    Monarch has served San Diego County for nearly 30 years, beginning as a one-room education center in 1987 and evolving into a K-12 school offering a comprehensive program designed to help chronically homeless children overcome poverty.

    Programs and services we provide our students year-round include:
    • Academic: common core-aligned curriculum, thematic integrated projects, workshop model for reading and math, tiered interventions
    • Social: athletics, creative arts, student events and clubs
    • Emotional: basic needs, mental and physical health, family assistance
    • Life Skills: career exploration, college preparation, alumni support and engagement
  4. How will they know if they are making progress?
    Progress is determined by evaluating each student's success in achieving measurable transformation in our four pillars of student growth.
  5. What have and haven't they accomplished so far?
    Our accomplishments include the following:
    • Monarch has developed a model that addresses the needs of homeless students and supports student growth in the four key areas that are critical to their future success.
    • In 2015 Monarch was awarded a six-year accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) recognizing the school for the high-quality learning opportunities we provide students.
    • Monarch is the only comprehensive K-12 school in the U.S. developed specifically to serve homeless students.

    Going forward, our plans include the following:
    • Develop evaluation methods to measure outputs and outcomes for all programs
    • Continue to research and incorporate best practices into our program development
    • Expand our focus on preparing students for postsecondary education and career
    • Share our effective practices with others so we can positively impact the learning of more homeless students

Erin Spiewak

BIO

Spiewak has a proven track record of nonprofit leadership, most recently serving as executive director for the Gary and Mary West Foundation. Prior to this role, she served as program officer at the West Foundation and as program staff and financial analysis for the Rose Foundation/WebMD Health Foundation. Her notable professional affiliations include: founding board member and treasurer for the Downtown Charter High School; education advisory committee member for the United Way of San Diego County; education committee chair for Women Give San Diego; and chair for San Diego Workforce Funders Collaborative. Spiewak's involvement with Monarch School dates back to 2003 as a volunteer helping lead a mentor program, and was named ""Volunteer of the Year"" in 2004. Through this involvement, Spiewak said she experienced the transformative opportunity the organization provides its students, families and the community, and was inspired to continue pursuing further opportunities in nonprofit education work.
