Overview

Self-reported by organization

Life with diabetes is never easy. That’s why in 2004 a group of parents that have children with diabetes created the Diabetes Scholars Foundation. The goal was to lessen the burden of diabetes through education and give affected people the tools they need to deal with the disease.
Each year, Children with Diabetes hosts a spectacular diabetes conference where thousands of people come together. It’s an opportunity for individuals, impacted by diabetes, to increase their  knowledge of diabetes management, receive up-to-date research information and build a lifelong diabetes network. Unfortunately due to economic situations, some families will never have the ability to attend a Children with Diabetes conference and participate in this very unique experience. The Diabetes Scholars Foundation is committed to changing this by providing conference scholarships to families in need. For families dealing with economic hardship as well as a life threatening illness, the conference has both an immediate and long term impact on them. To date we have given over 300 families the opportunity to attend a diabetes education conference.
A cornerstone endeavor of the Diabetes Scholars Foundation is our college scholarship program. Ours is the only foundation that funds college scholarships for which only students in the United States with Type 1 Diabetes are eligible. Our founders’ goal was that – in this one small area of life – diabetes could be an advantage. Since 2008 the Foundation has awarded over $500,000 in college scholarships to kids with Type 1 diabetes through scholarships of $5,000 each. Our college scholarships are not based on financial need; and not solely on academic achievement. The result is scholarships that benefit an impressive group of young students with diabetes. Until a cure is found, the Diabetes Scholars Foundation hopes to help as many deserving college students as possible.
