Mission Statement

The Center for Book Culture -- publisher of Dalkey Archive Press, the Review of Contemporary Fiction, and CONTEXT -- exists to challenge common assumptions about the nature of literary art, its audience, and the means by which readers can and should be reached. Our focus is on publishing and promoting innovative literature from around the world, and making sure these works remain available to the broadest and most diverse audience possible.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Program 1

The Center for Book Culture has three publishing programs. Dalkey Archive Press has published and restored to print works of fiction, poetry, and criticism from over 15 countries, by writers as diverse as Gertrude Stein, John Barth, and Ishmael Reed. Our authors have received major awards, including the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the Nobel Prize for Literature. Now in its twenty-first year, the Review of Contemporary Fiction remains the country's primary source for critical commentary and review coverage of writers from around the world whose works, because they are formally innovative or challenge conventional ways of seeing the world, are often overlooked by the mainstream media. CONTEXT is a literary and critical publication intended to reach younger readers (ages 18 to 26) who are developing serious reading habits. Copies of each issue are distributed nationally through university English departments, bookstores and libraries, and the entire contents are available online at www.centerforbookculture.org.
