BIO

Michael Hunter is the only insulin dependent aerobatics pilot in the world. Equally impressive is the fact that Michael went from being a private citizen, to student pilot, to flying aerobatics in an unheard of 18 months. His achievement is unprecedented in all of aviation. Needless to say, Michael has the natural athletic ability required for the rigors of competitive flying. In 1984, because the FAA wouldn't let him fly, Michael transferred his passion and energy to motorcycle racing. By 1988 he had turned professional. He raced in the aggressive Formula ll 250 cc Grand Prix Class. Down deep, however, Michael's real passion was for airplanes and aviation. Years before, as a senior at Crystal Lake High School, Michael had committed himself to become an Air Force pilot, intending to fly fighter jets. He was taking flying lessons in preparation for a military career and, just as he was ready to solo, Michael got sick. He was diagnosed with ?Insulin Dependent Diabetes' and his plans for a military aviation career abruptly ended. However, the flying dream never left him. Michael started flying gliders and ultra lights which are not FAA medically restricted. In 1996 the FAA began to rethink its policy regarding diabetics and, in 2000, Michael finally earned his private pilot's license. Today he flies his 230 horsepower 'Flight for Diabetes' Laser at air shows throughout the midwest. Michael earned his Bachelor's degree from Judson College. Prior to his full-time commitment to the 'Flight for Diabetes' program, Michael spent 15 years as a mechanical engineer, designing and building packaging and assembly machinery. Having achieved Chief Engineer status with his company, he left the comfort of corporate life to follow a dream. In of April of 2000, he created the Flight for Diabetes Foundation with the mission to 'Motivate Children with Diabetes & Raise Money for Diabetic Youth Programs'. Michael is married to Erica (Barnes) Hunter. The couple have three children. Trista, Davina & Mia. The Hunters reside in nearby Wonder Lake. Michael's 'Flight for Diabetes' serves as an inspiration for us all. The Galt Airport family is proud to have Michael Hunter flying out of One Zero Charlie.
