Mission Statement

The mission of the Illinois State Historical Society, founded in 1899, is to foster awareness, understanding, research, preservation, and recognition of history in Illinois. The Society is a registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization sustained solely by its membership and programs, and through donations and grants from corporations and individuals like you. The Illinois State Historical Society serves the state of Illinois and its 10 million citizens as well as persons whose lives were are our touched by temporary or permanent residency in the Prairie State-- including immigrants, Native Americans, transient populations, tourists, and visitors-- i.e., any person who can benefit from understanding Illinois and its legacy in the nation and in the world from prehistoric times to present day.

Illinois History Symposium

The Annual Illinois History Symposium provides an opportunity for all enthusiasts of history to come together, present research, and discuss how Illinois history can be researched and disseminated. The Centennial Awards Program honors those businesses and organizations that have operated continuously in Illinois for 100 years or more. The Annual Awards are given to local groups for projects that help preserve and promote local history. The Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society is a means of promoting current scholarly work on Illinois. Illinois Heritage is a popular history magazine targeted for a wider audience. The Historical Markers program promotes local historical events that have had a broader impact. They help foster community pride and is a tool for tourism. The Annual Meeting includes tours that focus on a specific regions historical resources. Scholarships are given out to young museum professionals, teachers, and PhD. candidates doing research on Illinois.
