Mission Statement

The Vincent L. Hawkinson Foundation inspires and encourages action for peace and justice by:
-Honoring individuals who have made significant and sustained contributions to peace and justice,
- Awarding scholarships to students who have demonstrated a deep commitment to peace and justice, and
- Publicizing the activities of honorees and scholarship recipients so that others are encouraged and inspired to action for peace and justice.

Hawkinson Scholarships are awarded annually to undergraduate or graduate students who are residents of or currently attending school in Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota or Wisconsin.

Honorary Award Program

Selected annually, the Vincent L. Hawkinson Foundation Honorary Award is given to an individual or individuals who have made a long and significant contribution to the causes of peace and social justice. Since 1988 when the Foundation was established, 47 veteran peace and justice activists have been recognized for their service to the community and to the world. While each is unique in his or her contribution, these committed individuals share a common goal — a more peaceful and just world. Hawkinson honorees are inspiring role models for the next generation, embodying the rewards and the struggles that are part of the pursuit of social justice and peacemaking.

Kimberly Lang Sanberg

BIO

Kimberly Sanberg joined the Hawkinson Foundation as Executive Director in 2014. She has over nine years of nonprofit management, marketing/communications, and fundraising experience. Kimberly is passionate about peace and justice and has worked on issues ranging from LGBT equality and environmental justice to international peace and conflice resolution. Her role at the Hawkinson Foundation includes overseeing fundraising, communications, marketing, human resources, financial management, and strategic planning. She comes to the Hawkinson Foundation from Nonviolent Peaceforce and Minnesota Conference UCC. Kimberly started her career in Washington, DC, where she did program development, fundraising, and communications work at nonprofits, including as the Director of Online Outreach at Environmental Working Group.
