What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Food Distribution
Second Harvest is a regional charitable food distribution organization, working in partnership with more than 100 hunger relief organizations including food shelves, emergency shelters and soup kitchens to distribute millions of pounds of food each year. Agency partners order food from an ever-changing list of available items we receive as donations from national food distributors, receive as government commodities or bulk purchases.
The Food Shelf at Second Harvest
Filling plates and refrigerators with more than non-perishable boxes and cans is important to the health of our community. Our on-site food shelf allows us to distribute healthy nutritious food directly to people from the Grand Rapids area and beyond. Just like agency partners, our food shelf receives the majority of their food through the food bank’s inventory and local grocery retailers. Meat, cheese, dairy and produce are commonly available.
Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) SENIOR FOOD PROGRAM
Having the ability to stretch the dollar is especially important to those on a fixed income. Through the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), we provide qualifying older Minnesota adults with a free supplemental food package every month. Each package includes a nutritious balance of shelf-stable foods and cheese.
Mobile Pop-Up Pantry Program
We are increasing access to the healthy food needed to help meet the nutritional needs of people experiencing hunger through our Mobile Pop-Up Pantry Program. Our goal is to ensure that they not only have enough food, but quality food.
Child Hunger Programs
Children’s healthy development is critically important to our community’s future. We must ensure all children have access to healthy foods to support their developing brains and bodies. We help provide access to food through the School Pantry Program and the Kidspack Backpack Program.
School Pantries are like mini food shelves within a school. It is a way to meet parents and kids where they are at and provide them with enough food to get through until the next school day.
For children who may have limited food in the home, Kids Packs Backpacks provide a package of food once a month to help them get by. Each pack contains 8-12 “kid friendly” food items that can be consumed with little or no preparation. The packs are distributed discreetly by school staff to children who may be at-risk of hunger when they don’t have access to school meals.
