Programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Program 1

Warrior Transition Workshops / Veteran Employment Workshops

Warrior Transition Workshops / Veteran Employment Workshops assist troops and their spouses that are transitioning from the military into civilian life, or veterans that are unemployed and looking for work, respectively. During the 1- or 2-day workshops clients develop a strategic plan, create a resume that conveys experience and value to employers, learn how to conduct an effective job search, and practice interview techniques. Workshop participants are individually assigned to Hire Heroes team members, who then maintain a coaching relationship until the workshop alumnus achieves employment or decides to end the partnership.

Career Opportunity Days

Career Opportunity Days are held in partnership with the USO in the vicinity of military bases that have previously hosted Warrior Transition Workshops. These non-traditional career events provide companies with an opportunity to meet and interview job-ready veterans and transitioning military members who can convey their talents and experience in terms that are understandable to a nonveteran.

Charting Impact

Self-reported by organization

Five powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

  1. What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The US DOL estimates the military discharges 160,000 Active service members and 110,000 Reserve and Guard members annually. As the military adjusts to smaller overseas commitments and the reality of deep budget cuts, one million men and women are expected to transition from the military to the civilian workforce in the next 4 years. Without effective transition assistance, many former military members could join the ranks of more than 500,000 unemployed veterans (BLS, April 2015).

Hire Heroes empowers veterans, transitioning service members, and their spouses, and guides them through a 3-phased process of Assessment (Phase 1), Resume Revision and Self-Marketing (Phase 2), and Follow-On Career Counseling and Mentorship (Phase 3), in order to contribute significantly to their successful employment. Our standard capacity for a Transition Specialist is 8 veterans assigned per week (384 veterans assigned each year); of the assigned veterans, about 288 respond to contact attempts; 260 work with the Specialist to complete a revised resume; and between 60 veterans (for a new Specialist) and 100+ veterans (for a seasoned Specialist) are confirmed hired. At current capacity (June 2015), Hire Heroes is able to assist about 230 clients each week, while turning away an average of 80 veterans or spouses that attempt to register for our services but are asked to re-register the following week. Our goal is to increase capacity, while improving program efficiency, so no veteran or spouse that comes to Hire Heroes for help is ever turned away for lack of resources.
  2. What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Clients that engage in our three-phase process of assessment, training, and mentorship gain the confidence and skills necessary to achieve civilian employment. This confidence begins to appear after the completion of a professional resume. While working one-on-one with a Transition Specialist to revise an already existing resume or create a new one, our clients learn how to communicate their past experience in civilian terms. In many cases, this entails eliminating military jargon and learning a new business vocabulary.
We also use the resume-revision process as a platform to train veterans and spouses on self-marketing. The military is a unified organization based on a group-first mindset. It can be difficult for veterans to express their accomplishments on an individual level – a skill necessary in a successful job search. The final resume becomes a tangible representation of each client's experience, enabling them to understand their transferable skills to the civilian sector and realize their ability to make the transition. Our work does not stop there. We do more than just create a professional resume: we train clients in effective job search techniques, networking, and interview skills so they can excel in the entire career transition process, and do so with confidence.
  3. What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Hire Heroes is uniquely qualified to serve unemployed veterans because of our capacity to understand and define the veteran value proposition and because of our personalized training approach. By creating relationships with the clients with whom we work, we gain the ability to understand their transferable skills and define their value proposition in civilian terms – allowing the clients to move forward with confidence. Our high touch approach is extremely effective, contributing to a confirmed hire rate of nearly 1 in every 2 veterans. On surveys, 96% of clients report they would recommend us to their peers.
  4. How will they know if they are making progress?
We record all operational data through our Salesforce.com records management system. Progress towards goals is measured via standardized, internal reporting. Weekly reporting includes: weekly number of registrants, number of assessments, number of final resumes, number of counseling sessions and confirmed hires. A "Confirmed Hire" is when a veteran or spouse received support from Hire Heroes USA that significantly advanced their job search resulting in employment in a position that matches their desires or skills.

To arrive at our primary measure of efficiency, the average cost per veteran hired, we divide our total expenses by the number of veterans confirmed hired during a reporting period. In Fiscal Year to Date 2015 the average cost per hire is about $1,600 – a 23% reduction in the cost per hire from Fiscal Year 2014.

We improve program effectiveness and efficiency by using the following evaluation tools.
    • Benchmarked Standards: To ensure our Veteran Programs team maintains effectiveness across a geographically dispersed service area, Transition Specialists are held to baseline standards that encourage weekly goals and increased veteran outreach.
    • Annual Improvements: Career training materials and teaching/counseling strategies are updated annually to ensure we maintain best-in-class standards.

    Client satisfaction is measured by:
    • Exit surveys completed by Transition Workshop participants.
    • Exit surveys completed by clients that have utilized Hire Heroes online services.
    • Alumni survey distributed to all Hire Heroes clients 3-6 months after receiving services.
  5. What have and haven't they accomplished so far?
Hire Heroes USA's growing ability to provide best-in-class employment assistance to transitioning troops, veterans and their spouses is apparent by comparing growth and results in 2015 to results in 2013.
    • Growth: Since 2013, Hire Heroes USA has added office locations in Auburn, WA; Torrance, CA; Plano, TX; and Raleigh, NC; and increased to a 58 person team. In May 2013, Hire Heroes had 20 team members at 3 locations.
    • Increase in program efficiency and effectiveness. Key statistics:
    - Average of 52 confirmed hires / week in 2015 (compared to 8 per week in May 2013)
    - 40% conversion rate in 2015, meaning that 40% of our clients in 2015 have successfully gained employment (compared to 18% conversion rate in May 2013)
    - Cost per hire decreased to just under $1,600, increasing the effectiveness of donor dollars (compared to $2,722 per hire in FY13 – a 41% reduction in cost per hire)
