Program 4

Health & Wellness

The school recognizes the relationship between student wellness and student achievement and provides and supports a healthy environment where children learn and participate in positive, developmentally appropriate, dietary and lifestyle practices. Head-to-toe physicals are performed by Cerner's Healthekids program for K-6 students. We provide onsite nurses (RNs) and social workers (LCSW) to provide immediate physical and mental health services as needed for students and faculty. Physical activity is a key element of this program. Students have daily recess and PE once a week. The Head of School hopes to increase PE classes for Middle School from once per week to twice per week by adding an additional PE teacher. With regard to nutrition, there are no vending machines on site and fresh fruit is available to students all day at both campuses. Raised bed gardening takes place at both campuses, and fresh produce, tomatoes, peas, peppers, are often added to the daily fruit cart offerings.

Transportation

According to its founders intent and current charter, Académie Lafayette is a public charter school which seeks to serve any child living within the boundaries of the Kansas City, Missouri public school system. It is specifically not intended to be a neighborhood school. In order to ensure that children living a distance from either of the two campuses have an opportunity to attend the school, door-to-door busing has been a long-standing though expensive priority. Door-to-door busing is offered to all students who live more than one mile from the campus location which they attend. This program which receives very little financial support from public sources (i.e. state or federal funds) is the single most expensive program at the school with a daily cost of $2800.
