The National World War I Museum and Memorial is America's only museum dedicated to remembering, interpreting, and understanding the Great War and its enduring impact on the global community. 2015 Accomplishments: In December 2014, President Obama signed legislature recognizing the Museum as the national memorial dedicated to World War I, which is the Museum's second congressional designation. The Museum is ranked by Yelp as the No. 5 Museum in the country (out of over 35,000). Trip Advisor ranks the Museum among the top 25 in the country, and we are ranked ""Number One Attraction in Kansas City"" by Trip Advisor 2007-14. The Museum was voted ""Favorite Museum"" by the KC Visitors' Choice Awards 2011-15. In 2015, guests from 73 countries contributed to the Museum breaking its attendance record for the second consecutive year. Attendance increased 20 percent to 282,588 compared to 2014 with an additional 431,180 individuals participating in activities held on the Museum's exterior campus grounds. Over 16,000 students visited the Museum for field trips, and 46,445 people attended Museum education events (increase of 77% compared to 2014). The Museum experienced record website traffic (1,134,460 page views) and record number of media impressions (1.34 billion). The Museum also curated or hosted 13 special exhibitions in 2015, including 3 interactive online exhibitions, which were seen by patrons from across the world. We partnered with over 130 cultural, recreational, civic organizations, and national and international galleries and institutions, to bring our patrons the most robust experiences. In 2015, 3,054 records were added to the Museum's online database, raising the total to more than 24,000 searchable object records. During the year, more than 20,000 individuals from 117 countries viewed nearly 170,000 pages within the online database. Overall, 321 volunteers contributed 47,329 hours of service, equivalent to $1.092 million in services and 23 full-time staff. 2016 Goals: Expand local, national, and international partnerships in order to expand visitorship and raise reputation of the Museum.Continue to pursue the goal to reach one million children during the Centennial in learning lessons from the Great War.Cultivate new funding opportunities, and build the Museum's collection in an effort to continue to attract even more diverse audiences.

Permanent & Special Exhibitions

The permanent main gallery exhibition, The World War, 1914-1919, is a comprehensive presentation of World War I. It offers insight on why countries went to war, how entire societies mobilized, and how war affected civilians and the military. Additionally, the Museum presents special exhibitions throughout the year. These exhibitions are produced by Museum staff or loaned from partnering institutions. In 2015, the Australian government partnered with us for A Centenary of Australian War Art, the most comprehensive collection of Australian war art ever seen outside of Australia. In 2016, the Museum is hosting The Volunteers: Americans Join World War I, 1914-1919 in partnership with AFS; and Images of the Great War: The European Offensives, 1914-1916 on loan from the Anne S.K. Brown Military Collection, Brown University Library. Funding Required: $50,000 - $200,000/exhibit.

The Museum holds the world's most diverse collection of World War I (1914-19) objects and documents (more than 100,000 objects and documents), representing each belligerent nation that was involved, is the second-oldest collecting institution in the world and presents a comprehensive global interpretation of World War I. The Museum's Edward Jones Research Center contains more than 50,000 archival documents and 8,000 library titles available for the public to access on-site and online. In 2015, the Museum accepted 165 new accessions into the permanent collection and the Edward Jones Research Center had 2,061 visitors, an 11% increase over 2014. Funding Required: $1 million to establish Collections and Acquisitions Endowment; $15,000 minimum for named fund within Endowment.

K-12 Education Programs

The Museum provided subsidized visits for over 3,000 students from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds in 2015. The program waives admission fees for students, provides them a free lunch, and a $250 stipend to assist with the cost of transportation for eligible schools that have at least 51% of students enrolled in a reduced-cost or free lunch program. Funding Required: $48,000/year. These students, along with non-subsidized schools, participate in School at the Museum, which provides K-12 students and teachers tours and activities. More than 13,000 un-subsidized students participated in this program in 2015. Experiences include listening to WWI-era music, speeches and poetry; and exploring how camouflage and artillery work on interactive tables. Funding Required: $300,000/year.

Community Education Programs

Community Education Programs include lectures, presentations and family-friendly activities. Hands-On History is an interactive public program at which guests can explore real World War I non-accession objects such as helmets, canteens and binoculars. In 2015, 3,100 guests participated in Hands-On History. Funding Required: $5,000/year. The Teacher Fellowship invites some of the best teachers (approximately 10 are accepted each year) from across the United States to use the Museum's resources to thoroughly research a subject and create curriculum that the Museum publishes on its website. Funding Required: $30,000/year. Lessons of Liberty are the Museum's original lesson plans, available on the website for teachers worldwide, which were used in 2015 to teach a Museum record 61,126 students from dozens of states and countries.

Regnier Family Foundation Digital Learning Program and Online Learning

The Museum also curates unique and interactive online exhibitions with online capability in mind. Funding Required: $20,000/online exhibition. The Museum will partner with Scholastic to produce curriculum for elementary, middle school and high school classrooms over three years that will be posted on the Scholastic website, which reaches nearly one million children annually. Funding Required: $1,000,000. Since the Museum's online database launched in July 2013 the Museum's Registrar has digitized more than 24,000 object images with accompanying information to the Museum's website. In 2015, more than 20,000 individuals from 117 countries viewed nearly 170,000 pages within the online database. Funding Required: $150,000 per year.

Conceived, funded, and stewarded by the people of Kansas City, we have been part of the city's story for almost a century. In an effort to continue as a leading Great War authority, we have identified several priorities ranging from $1,000 - $5 million (naming opportunities available).Special Exhibition Gallery: Supporting the Centennial commemoration and the Museum's role as a leading World War I authority, a new Exhibition Gallery is necessary to properly host our growing series of exhibitions from partnering institutions. Dr. Matthew Naylor is the President and CEO of the National World War I Museum and Memorial. A native of Australia, Naylor began his tenure at the Museum in June 2013 and possesses more than 20 years of leadership in the non-profit arena.Under Naylor's leadership, the Museum has achieved unprecedented success, breaking records for attendance, educational/community event participants, website traffic and media impressions in each of his first two full years (2014-2015) as President and CEO. In that timeframe, attendance rose nearly 50 percent to a record 282,588 in 2015. Naylor's vision substantially raised the organization's profile nationally and internationally, with more than 2.5 billion media impressions in his tenure, along with increases in followers and impressions on its social media platforms. Naylor also facilitated the establishment of dozens of institutional partnerships across the world.Naylor supported a bi-partisan effort from members of Congress in passing legislation to formerly recognize the institution as America's national World War I museum and memorial in 2014. In 2015, the United States World War I Centennial Commission appointed Naylor as a Commissioner on the board, which is responsible for the nation's commemoration of the Great War.Naylor earned a Ph.D. from Curtin University in Perth, Australia. He currently serves on the Kansas City Economic Development Corporation Advocacy Council.Previously, Naylor served as the Director of Advancement at the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City, MO., Naylor was a member of the institution's executive leadership team and was responsible for development, marketing and donor services, among other duties.Prior to his tenure at the Nelson-Atkins Museum, Naylor spent more than nine years as president of Outreach International, an international humanitarian organization with a presence in 15 developing nations across the world that specializes in sustainable and participatory community development.Naylor earned a PhD from Curtin University in Perth, Australia.

STATEMENT FROM THE Principal Officer

"Fiscal Year 2012 is a time of robust activity for the Museum as we move forward with planning for the World War I Centennial. In September the Museum will host a Centennial Conference that will bring scholars, governmental officials and museum administrators together from across the globe to share and further develop their Centennial plans. We are moving forward with our Special Exhibition Gallery expansion project, which will increase our ability and flexibility to present changing and traveling exhibitions with focused themes. Other projects include the development of digital learning programs that will employ videoconferencing and other tools to bring our programs to audiences worldwide. All of this activity is made possible by a truly outstanding and dedicated staff. Our large cadre of volunteers is also vital to the success of the organization."
