Mission Statement

The Ken Waldie Memorial Fund, (a 501(c) 3 charity) provides annual scholarships in memory of Ken's honorable and patriotic life. Ken was a passenger on American Airlines Flight 11 out of Boston on September 11, 2001—he was a husband, father and a graduate of Northeastern University, the United States Naval Academy, and Bethel Park High School. Our primary mission is to grow the fund to create higher education opportunities for Bethel Park graduates.

Overview

Self-reported by organization

2013 was an "ordinary year". We continued to work daily on remembering our friend and classmate. 1) Last year we successfully transitioned our main fundraiser from a 10 year golf outing to a memory/class reunion event. It enabled more volunteers to become active and plan the steps for our continued success in the next 3-5 years. 2)We continue to be the largest single scholarship at Bethel Park High School (and have been every year of our award). We have now awarded $ 62,000 to student/athletes to help with the cost of a college education. 3) We participated in the Travis Manion 9/11 Hero's Run as Team Waldie. The team included members of the Steel City Naval ROTC unit for the third consecutive year, a tradition we hope to continue. 4) We have recently had a wonderful plaque completed with a list of previous winners and college of choice. It is currently on display in the schools trophy case, but the final resting spot will be the entrance of the swimming pool. It outlines Ken's life, but more importantly shows the stability of the award, with blank spots for students who have yet to start school. We will be around for a long time. 2014 goals were to: 1) Work with the Bethel Park High School sports team coaches in a more efficient manner to get the scholarship application to all who may qualify. In the past, we relied heavily on in school announcements and the Guidance Office as our points of contact. By reaching out to coaches, they are more likely to identify the eligible candidate. From there it is up to the student. 2) We are beginning to work with the coach of the Swim team, in naming the winner of team MVP as the "Ken Waldie Award." Ken was an outstanding individual swimmer, but an even better team mate. We need to grow this relationship, as many of the BPHS swimmers are recognized at local award banquets for their accomplishments.

Ken Waldie Scholarship

Ken was a passenger on American Airlines Flight 11 out of Boston on September 11, 2001—a husband, father and a graduate of Northeastern University, the United States Naval Academy, and Bethel Park High School. We honor and celebrate his life by providing scholarships to BPHS graduates that have proven themselves academically and have demonstrated outstanding citizenship and character--virtues that Ken embodied throughout his life.In ten years, the fund has awarded a total of $49,500 to Bethel Park graduates and $9,500 to the prestigious Waldie/Shaeffer Scholarship Award for a graduate in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh who commits to serving his/her country in the military.

Funding Needs

1) Our most pressing need is for a book keeper. We have grown much larger than ever imagined. 2) Web site development. We have been very stale in this area, with little change over the years, outside of up dates on events and scholarship winners. 3) Jump into the age of Facebook and twitter. 4) Help in publicizing what we do. We have awarded $ 68,500 to area students. We are the largest single scholarship awarded at his alma mater, and have been since day one. The aspect of the September 11 storyline, Ken's background at the United States Naval Academy (where he was class president EACH OF HIS 4 YEARS. Something that had never been recorded prior to Ken's time.) We don't seek attention, but if it helps the cause!5) The organization of the pictures, articles and events that have spanned our efforts over the past 10 plus years.

BIO

A college degree in Economics from Bethany College and 30 plus years in the business world is my experience. The friendship with Ken, for 30+ years, provided me with so much more. I was not ready to have this friendship end, so a plan was developed to move forward. The plan was simple. You surround yourself with good people, people that believe as strongly as you do in a common goal. You allow them to be active and creative in accomplishing the next step. You set the foundation, and then you work at it every day. We have done nothing special. We are passionate about our cause and look to grow stronger.

STATEMENT FROM THE Principal Officer

"The Ken Waldie Memorial Fund is a 501(c)3 non profit organization, who's officers and volunteers are not compensated. They are a dedicated group that believe the rewards are in awarding financial assistance to deserving college bound families. We are entering into a time where our current, and certainly our future scholarship recipients will know of the terrorist attacks through books and documentaries- rather of "where we were" on September 11th.We hope through the story of an alumni, and how he impacted the lives of friends and classmates to motivate the applicants. Certainly to all involved in our efforts, "we will not forget." "
