Mission Statement

The Theatre Historical Society of America is a non-profit educational and historical organization which records the architectural, cultural and social history of American theatres and encourages and promotes awareness, appreciation and serious study of them. We serve as a resource for members, researchers, architects, preservationists and others through our publications, archives and other activities, and serve as an advocate for the preservation, restoration and reuse of America's historic theatres.

American Theatre Architecture Archives

Acquisition, maintenance and operation of an extensive archive of material on more than 14,000 American theatres, including photographs, negatives, 27,000 transparencies, 650 books, 250 linear feet of periodicals, trade and professional journals, magazines, clippings, corporate and business records, playbills and programs, supplier and trade catalogs; 350 sets of blueprints, drawings; 1,500 postcards; three-dimensional architectural artifacts; theatre furnishings, uniforms; and numerous other items relating to American theatres and their history. Material is available to members and non-member researchers and historians.

Conclave Theatre Tour

Held annually (continuously since 1970) in a different city or area of the country, typically attended by 100-250 members and non-members. The four to five day event includes visits to 25 to 40 historic theatres, as well as many social activities, including slide presentations, book and merchandise sales and a silent auction.

Magazine Publishing

The Society regularly produces an illustrated quarterly journal, Marquee (published continuously since 1969), featuring research papers and articles, reprints of early historic material and illustrations from the Society's archive; an Annual Edition(published continuously since 1970), featuring an in-depth presentation of a theatre or topic; and a quarterly newsletter, with timely news of interest on theatres, members and activities.
