Mission Statement

The Waterford Institute began with one man's vision over 35 years ago. It was then that Dr. Dustin Heuston, a headmaster in New York City, saw an urgent need to supplement the traditional classroom experience. He set the goal to provide both educational excellence and equity to all children through the transformative power of new technology. He founded the Waterford Institute, which quickly became known as a pioneer in new interactive training that harnessed the full power of the computer to enhance learning. Early accomplishments included the development of the first educational videodisk for McGraw Hill, as well as the first educational videodisk for the National Science Foundation.

Waterford has continued to innovate and create highly effective and high quality software. In 2006, Waterford Early Math and Science received TechLearning Awards of Excellence for Best Educational Software. The 2008 Codie Awards gave the Waterford Early Reading Program the Best Course/Classroom Management Solution Award and gave Waterford Early Math and Science the Best Science Instructional Solution Award.

Today Waterford is headquartered in Sandy, Utah, where an enormous investment in educational research has made Waterford the nation's leader in Early Learning software for reading, math, and science programs. Millions of children across the world benefit from Waterford innovations.

It started with one man. It continues in thousands of classrooms and homes across the world. Dr. Heuston's vision comes to life each time Waterford technology inspires a child to learn.

Overview

Self-reported by organization

The Waterford Institute's Pre-K UPSTART program is demonstrating better literacy skills and stronger literacy growth rates for program participants than children not in the program. According to an external evaluation by the Evaluation and Training Institute (ETI) published in 2012, UPSTART children performed significantly better than control group children on nine out of ten Brigance subtests and the total Brigance (an early learning phonics and reading assessment). When looking at the statistical effect sizes for UPSTART participation, the ETI study notes that while individual tutoring and interventions usually show the largest effect sizes, UPSTART effect sizes were nearly twice as large as individual interventions tend to be. In the ETI report, the average achievement effect size (with a .20 being good and .60+ being exceptional) was .40 for interventions, .26 for small group interventions, .18 for classroom interventions, and .10 for whole school interventions. In comparison, UPSTART effect sizes were .68 for the total Brigance and .85 for the total Bader.
