The River Program

St. Margaret's School the only
girls' independent boarding/day school in the country to offer a
formal river program. Our program helps girls build confidence through
outdoor adventures, encourages them as they explore environmental
science careers, teaches them water sports they can enjoy for a
lifetime, and shows them the value of volunteer service. Learning from
the river, students discover the rich interrelationships between
science, history, and culture. The River Program is an integral part
of the St. Margaret's experience, from the curriculum and student
activities to campus life.

Life at St. Margaret's School revolves around the river. The
Rappahannock greets you across the breakfast table through the windows
of our new dining facility. Science class brings an opportunity to
grow marsh grasses, measure water quality and plant oysters. You may
work on a community service project for one of several environmental
organizations during activity block. Once classes are over, the crew
team hits the water. And just before lights out, you take one last look
out your dorm window at the moonlight dancing on the water. The River
Program makes St. Margaret's different. If you come here, it will make
you different, too.

Every student participates in the River Program, working with her
advisor to tailor program offerings to suit personal goals and
interests. Our graduates include businesswomen who sail for
relaxation, moms who teach their children biology, marine scientists
who develop environmental policy, and community leaders who commit
themselves to saving the Chesapeake Bay. pasting

Program 3

Independent Study Program - ISP

Seniors are eligible to participate in an Independent Study Program during the Minimester Term at St. Margaret’s. The format of the program allows students to design a meaningful two-week program that might explore a potential profession, conduct a formal research project, or participate in community service. There is a special application process for an ISstudents are completely responsible for deadlines and due dates. Failure to meet these due dates will most likely result in the denial of the ISincluding a daily schedule (required), daily responsibilities and names of on-site supervisors before receiving final approval for their ISthe faculty member will work with the student to clearly identify what the student wishes to gain from the experience. They will also help the ISP Candidate prepare and rehearse a final presentation. During the ISP, students will maintain a daily journal to assist them in the preparation of the final presentation. The ISP will culminate in a 10-12 minute presentation to the school and a short ISP summary paper. The presentation will occur the week after students return to campus from Spring Break. In addition the Site Sponsor will complete an evaluation of the ISP candidate and send it to the ISP Coordinator. Participation in an ISP is recorded on the final transcript with an Honors, Pass, or Fail grade, and the presentation score will be incorporated into the trimester English grade as a test.

QMSGSA School Exchanges

The association works to promote the Queen Margaret of Scotland heritage, foster a shared identity and sense of belonging among member schools, offer an international stage and perspective, and provide opportunities for interaction, relationships and participation. Many St. Margaret's students have taken advantage of this network to visit other countries, study and learn about other cultures. All students benefit from living and learning with girls from other countries who come to Tappahannock.
