Program 1

Water=Life

The Association Grao de Mostardalocated in Quixada, a drought-stricken area in the northeastern state of Ceará, Brazil assists 174 children and teenagers ranging from 3 to 15 years of age and their families. The municipal water supply is not enough to serve the population during the drought months (more than half of the year), and is not safe for drinking or cooking. During the drought, this extremely poor population is forced to buy water, which is sold in unsafe containers carried by mules. To improve the water supply, the Grão de Mostarda is planning to build a 80,000 liter cistern to collect water during the rainy season that will then be used by the local population when the water supply is limited or none.
