How does this organization make a difference?

Overview

Self-reported by organization

Our eight formal programs - Best Buddies Middle Schools, High Schools, Colleges, Promoters, Citizens, e-Buddies, Jobs, and Ambassadors – will positively impact more than 700,000 individuals this year. Best Buddies also is systematically implementing our 2020 initiative that will witness the organization's continued significant growth, both domestically and overseas. Best Buddies volunteers annually contribute, at no cost to their communities, support services that equate to more than $164 million USD.

Even though Best Buddies has advanced tremendously in our short existence, many areas of the country and many regions of the world still lack programs to help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities become part of mainstream society. Our goal is to continue expanding nationwide and at the local community level, while more broadly engaging the global community through our programs.

Principal Officer

Mr. Anthony Kennedy Shriver

BIO

Anthony Kennedy Shriver is the Founder and Chairman of Best Buddies International, which he established in 1989 to realize one-to-one friendships between non-disabled students and people with intellectual disabilities. Recognizing the tremendous volunteer potential of university students, Mr. Shriver first inspired his fellow college peers to personally collaborate in expanding the realm of opportunities that persons with intellectual disabilities should experience. Today, through Mr. Shriver's stewardship and entrepreneurial spirit, Best Buddies has grown into a leading nonprofit entity, with increasing international reach across six continents, creating mutually enriching one-to-one friendships and competitive employment opportunities, respectively, for people with intellectual disabilities. Best Buddies is comprised of seven programmatic divisions, positively impacting over 700,000 participants this year. The organization is active in each of the 50 United States, and operates accredited international programs in 50 countries; with additional country programs in various phases of both initial and advanced development. By 2020, Best Buddies will continue to build on its successful volunteer base in all 50 States, further expand its accredited international programs to 100 countries and annually engage more than 1,400,000 participants worldwide.

STATEMENT FROM THE Principal Officer

""I believe that friendship is the key to building the self-esteem essential to a happy and productive life, and that is why I started Best Buddies. At Best Buddies, we envision a world where people with intellectual disabilities are recognized for their ABILITIES, embraced by society and valued in the workplace. Until that vision becomes a reality, we will continue to educate...students; community members; corporations and employers about the emotional, functional and natural needs and abilities of people with intellectual disabilities." said Anthony K. Shriver, Founder and Chairman of Best Buddies International."
