Museum Passport to Freedom
“Children who visit museums have higher achievement in reading, math, and science.”
–Institute of Museum and Library Services
The African American Civil War Museum (AACWM) established the Museum Passport to Freedom Program in 2017 to encourage students to visit museums in their community regularly and to take advantage of learning experiences available at these institutions.
The Museum Passport to Freedom Program was inspired by a study conducted by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) in 2014. IMLS found that students who visit museums early in life have higher achievement scores in reading, math and science. Furthermore, the study showed that students from low-income homes are less likely to visit museums than their more affluent counterparts.
The AACWM endeavors to close the achievement gap by affording all students the benefits of museum learning and encouraging families to visit museums together. Under the program, the AACWM has Outreach Fellows who visit schools, share the AACWM’s programs, and arrange field trips to the AACWM. Each student receives an age-appropriate book and a “passport” to have stamped when visiting other museums. When a student fills their passport with stamps, they may return it to the AACWM for a prize.
The AACWM has distributed over 3,000 passports and provided field trips to District of Columbia Public School students attending Title One schools (indicating the school serves high percentages of children from low-income families).
Group Programs
The African American Civil War Museum provides a range of group programming to visitors of all ages. The most program is the School of the Solider program which introduces visitors to the life of a soldier in the United States Colored Troops. Participants will meet with a historical interpreter who portrays a persona from the Civil War era. The program offers the opportunity to do soldiers drills, and feel and handle equipment.
Teacher Workshops/Seminars
The African American Civil War Museum provides teacher programming and professional development through out the year. Teacher workshops have ranged in topic from "Congress and Emancipation", "First Freed: the Legacy of DC Emancipation," "Civil War to Civil Rights," "Historic Sites of the United States Colored Troops," and "How to Reconstruct a Nation: The Reconstruction Era Through Primary Sources." Professional Development for Teachers has been provided for a variety of partnering organizations and school districts including: National Council for the Social Studies, Teaching For Change, Richmond School District, DC Public School District, New Orleans Schools, and Howard University/Teaching for Change.
Re-enactment / History trips/ Festivals
Demonstration from historical interpreters on a soldiers life and female personas from the Civil War era. Historical trips include Gettysburg Remembrance Parade, Historic Sites of the United States Colored Troops (Camp William Penn, Fort Monroe, and Fort Pocahontas).
Festivals include: back to school and living history days festivals.
Family Research/Oral History Presentation
The African American Civil War Museum interacts with families descendant from the members of the United States Colored Troops. We provide a platform for descendants to provide more in depth information about their ancestors for public edification.
