What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
SE Veterans Service Center
The SE Veterans Service Center provides variety for up to 50 male veterans. Thirty individuals reside in the transitional housing program. Twenty reside in the Single Room Occupancy (SRO) program. Individuals in the transitional housing program are in need of extensive support services (e.g., job, mental health and/or substance abuse counseling). Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Access Housing Inc. DC (AHI) seeks to assist homeless veterans, both men and women, with supportive services to help them return to permanent, stable housing and a better quality of life. AHI believes that by providing individuals with the core building blocks for stability (e.g.,transitional housing or SRO's, healthy, nutritious meals, wrap-around services including housing, job, mental health and substance abuse counseling), the individuals it serves can get back on their feet and break the cycle of homelessness.
The program's long-term goal is to assist as many veterans as possible to return to permanent housing and employment (if applicable/appropriate).
AHI seeks to develop a literacy program, a labor training program, a robust PTSD program, and a food bank for both residents and the community in the near future.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Access Housing Inc. DC (AHI) partners with a variety of government and community-based organizations to achieve its mission. An example of said partnerships include working with the Veterans Administration's Community-Based Outpatient Clinic and the DC-based Veterans Medical Center to provide health services for resident/non-resident veterans.
AHI also partners with the Veterans Administration to provide benefits counseling to residents/non-residents.
AHI partners with Residential Care Inc. to provide mental health counseling to veterans dealing with PTSD, brain injury and substance abuse.
AHI's employment/housing counselor works with employment agencies in the metro area as well as housing program staff in these communities as well. US Vets maintains an office at AHI and provides direct, hands-on services to veterans seeking work.
AHI is also developing a robust volunteer program, people from across the community, active military/civilian/military family members, who provide a variety of programs and services to residents. Some of these include nutritional counseling, computer training, and a job club.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Access Housing Inc. is financially supported by the Veterans Administration, the local Continuum of Care, the Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness, the Coalition of Homeless Housing (COHHA), donations via the DC One Fund, the Combined Federal Campaign, the local United Way, and local grantors (e.g., Sears, Bed, Bath and Beyond). The organization is beginning a grants program to obtain more support from foundations and corporations.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
In recent months, AHI has opened an on-site barber/beauty salon to provide complimentary grooming services to veterans. This is key when helping them look their best while job searching/working.
AHI has launched a computer training class at the Microsoft store at Pentagon City. Ten veterans attend the hands-on class which provides training on such subjects as how to use Word/Excel/PowerPoint, navigating the Internet, and resume building. Five volunteers in the community provide direct support during the classes to help provide a personalized training environment.
AHI seeks to upgrade its computer system to help the veterans have access to the most up-to-date equipment available. It recently received a donation of 20 laptop computers from MITRE Corporation. It is currently seeking assistance to purchase/obtain desktop computers.
