Mission Statement

Formed in 2001 by a group of community members, Capitol Hill Computer Corner's mission is to foster academic and career development through technology skills training for youth and adults in the community. Our vision is to create a community of active and skilled technology users that pursue post-secondary education and careers with upward mobility, make positive decisions, and reach their career potential. To achieve this we offer innovative programs for youth and adults and establish partnerships with companies, non-profit organizations, government offices, and local schools to leverage community and professional resources.

Program 1

Youth and adults can also take advantage of Open Lab hours six days a week. During these hours members can use the computers, access Internet and email, work on individual projects, and get help from a trained staff member. Computer Corner is a vibrant neighborhood meeting place where youth and adults can access services in safe and welcoming state-of-the-art labs and get assistance from trained staff members. Approximately 300 youth and adults are currently enrolled as members and access our programs and services. Computer Corner offers four programs for youth in grades 4-12 and two for adults that allow students to explore, master or apply technology based on their skills and experience. During the past six months Computer Corner staff has created a program philosophy and curricula which reflects our commitment to ?Best in Class? services for our participants. The After School Program serves students in grades 4-6 and strengthens academic skills through a homework assistance program and engaging technology-based, student-directed projects. Students in this program explore technology and have the opportunity to earn their first piece of technology (digital camera, memory stick, printer). During the 2005-2006 school year students will participate in three interactive units--Digital Photography, Print Media, and Web Design?and develop projects using each technology. The Middle School Program allows students in grades 7-8 to master technology by preparing for and becoming IC3 certified (Internet Core Competency Certification, a global, validated, standards-based training and certification program). This certification, an industry standard, demonstrates basic computer literacy in the following areas: Microsoft Office Application, Internet and Email, and troubleshooting. Students in the Middle School Program have an opportunity to earn a computer for home use. During the 2005-2006 school year students will also participate in two interactive units-- Print Media and Web Design-- and develop projects using each technology. This program takes place at Computer Corner. The Summer Technology Program gives youth in grades 4-8 the opportunity to use technology as a tool for developing creative projects including short films, web sites, 3D animation, graphic designs, and digital photographs. Each week students explore the city or surrounding areas on weekly field trips. The program culminates with an end of summer media festival at which students showcase their projects to over two hundred members of the community. This program takes place at Payne Elementary School. The Teen Program provides a social and technology-rich environment for older youth to apply their technology skills. Students participate in collaborative, student-directed projects for neighborhood clients and also secure summer employment. Students in the program benefit from career and education support and have the opportunity to earn volunteers service hours. Adults can take part in our Community Education Program, which offers them the opportunity use computers in formal classes or in self-directed activities. Our new daytime training program, TOPS, is a comprehensive three month course that prepares adults to enter or reenter the workforce. The course focuses primarily on the Microsoft Office Suite and is structured so that students graduate with a portfolio of completed projects. In addition, we offer drop in classes for adults two nights a week. Classes rotate regularly and cover a range of applications in the Microsoft Office Suite. Students can also acquire skills in desktop publishing, digital photography, resume writing, Internet, and email. Youth and adults can also take advantage of Open Lab hours six days a week. During these hours members can use the computers, access Internet and email, work on individual projects, and get help from a trained staff member.

Mr. Steven Berry

BIO

Steven Berry joined the Computer Corner staff in January of 2003. As Program Director, Berry led the expansion of structured programs from 3 to 7; to offer new services to teens and senior citizens. An advocate for certification, Berry was key in securing IC3 certification testing center status and establishing certification training programs for teens and adults. Born and raised in the Washington DC Metropolitan area, Mr. Berry has experienced a lot of the same issues and hardships that inner city youth still face. He began youth development work at the Perry School as an intern for the Summer Camhe was hired full time as a lab instructor and later promoted to Program Coordinator of Perry's 30-workstation state-of-the-art Networked Learning Center. Youth media literacy and adult technology training were some of the areas of service that Mr. Berry's tutelage helped to expand. Mr. Berry's involvement with the YDC Pilot helped him develop his method and approach to technology education for youth. Mr. Berry has also taught for the Virtual Enterprise Adult Training Program. Virtual Enterprise is an international program that has been adapted to provide job readiness, technology training and business management skills to adult participants.
