Mission Statement

The Jewish
Museum of Maryland collects, preserves, and studies the history and material
culture of Maryland Jewry, including two historic synagogues at our Herbert
Bearman Campus. Our exhibitions, programs, and activities interpret the
American Jewish experience for diverse audiences, foster cross-cultural
understanding, and promote public discourse about issues in Jewish and American
life.

JMM will expand its programming and physical presence, becoming a vibrant center for social and cultural activity, Jewish study and scholarship, and public discourse, and a major historical-cultural tourist attraction. The JMM will reach larger and more diverse audiences through expanded activities at multiple locations, including substantial on-line resources. The Museum will continue its role as a center for Jewish culture and as the primary repository of Maryland Jewish heritage, maintaining its leadership position among Jewish museums in the United States.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Program 1

The Society seeks to document Jewish community history on all levels, and make all of its holdings available for exhibits and public research. JHSOM administers a collection of 500,000 documents and photographs and 8,000 objects, and actively collects materials and documents buildings and folkways. JHSOM also produces 4-5 exhibits a year, maintains a public research program, publishes catalogs, books and monographs, offers a wide variety of public educational programs, and maintains the Loyd Street Synagogue (1845) and the B'nai Israel Synagogue ($480,000). One of JHSOM's recent accomplishments was being accredited by the American Association of Museums.
