Mission Statement

Non-profit museum.

The first museum in the United States to honor James Madison, the Museum's mission is to preserve and present the remarkable history of Orange County, along with the contributions of the Father of the Constitution/President James Madison, First Lady, Dolley Madison and Orange-born President (General) Zachary Taylor. Enjoy the large collection of agricultural implements and 1732 cube house; testaments to the agrarian history of Orange. Our Black History Room conveys the intertwined history of Black Americans from the American Revolution onward through Post-Emancipation. The Madison Room displays numerous possessions of the Madisons' and Taylor; along with a few from Washington, Jefferson and Monroe. Our Temporary Exhibit Room changes every few months - so come see what's on exhibit today.

BIO

Our Associate Director, Ms. Sullivan, runs the day-to-day operations, researches and erects exhibits, cares for the collection and handles all administrative duties. She is currently finishing her degree in History with a focus on American History and publishes a monthly column in the local paper entitled "From the Collection." Ms. Sullivan has been in this position since 2010 and has dramatically improved the flow and presentation of artifacts as well as creating new and engaging exhibits every four months in our Temporary Exhibit Room. She has also increased our electronic footprint as well as measurably increasing our visitation over the last couple of years. Her enthusiasm and kindly personality have enhanced the visitor experience, which is indicated in Trip Advisor reviews and letters/e-mails. Prior to joining our museum, she was a single/divorced mother of four, working as an executive administrative assistant for various types of businesses for 35+ years. She has experience as a docent with The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and The Montpelier Foundation and her ability to speak to individuals or groups allows the visitors' to have an enjoyable experience.

Ms. Sullivan reports to our Board of Directors, of which Ms. Blair is the current President. Ms. Blair's information is under the Board of Directors Chair information.

STATEMENT FROM THE President, Board of Directors

"The James Madison Museum of Orange County Heritage has been honoring The Father of the Constitution/Author of the Bill of Rights since 1976. Further, our museum has a wealth of artifacts of Orange and the Piedmont that include a 1733 Cube House, farm conveyances and implements, textiles, books, documents and so much more. Called a "hidden gem" by many, the 1928 building that houses the collection is deceptive from the exterior; guests are always amazed at what they discover inside. We are open Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 am - 5:00 pm and charge a nominal admission of $5.00 per adult - children/students admitted free of charge."
