Mission Statement

The UMW Foundation is an independent and separately incorporated 501(c)(3) organization and is responsible for receiving, managing, and administering donations of cash, securities, real and intellectual property, and other private resources for the support of the University of Mary Washington; and managing such gifts in accordance with donor intent and its fiduciary responsibilities. The Foundation retains personnel experienced in planning for and managing private contributions and works with the University to assist and advise in such activities. The Foundation strives to partner with the University and engage the region by demonstrating leadership in the areas of economic development, commerce, urban renewal, and civic responsibility, always being mindful to build a positive image for the University and highlight its significant role in the community when possible.

2012-2013 Accomplishments: During the second year (quiet phase) of the Mary Washington First Campaign, gifts and pledges total $18 million. As of June 1, 2013, Alumni unrestricted support is currently up by 3% over last year (total alumni giving is up 29% over last year). A component of Arts for the Community, the UMW Philharmonic received new scholarship support in excess of $60,000 this fiscal year. Alumni relations successfully coordinated 15 campus events and programs during FY2013. 2013-2014 Goals: Raise $10 million in total gifts and pledges Raise $1.3 million in unrestricted Fund for Mary Washington.Increase parent giving by 15-20%.Increase corporate and foundation giving by 30%. Strengthen existing UMW Alumni Networks Develop a concrete plan for fund raising/sustainability of University's College of Business, College of Education and College of Arts and Sciences. Create a communications plan focusing on exacting campaign messages, building a culture of philanthropy. Short videos, print material, electronic communications, social media, designed to tell the Mary Washington story.
