Overview

Self-reported by organization

Red Hill is the last home and burial place of America's great patriot, Patrick Henry. Annually, over 10,000 visitors come and explore Red Hill. While they are here, visitors are escorted into the timeline exhibit room where they view an introductory fifteen-minute video on Patrick Henry's career and life at Red Hill before visiting the Red Hill Museum. There visitors follow a self-guided tour of Red Hill which includes Patrick Henry's grave site, and the grounds overlooking the Staunton River Valley, which appear much as they did in Henry's time.Red Hill houses the largest collection of Patrick Henry artifacts in the world. One of the best known pieces in the museum is the painting by Peter Frederick Rothermel, ""Patrick Henry Before the Virginia House of Burgesses."" This famous historical painting reflects Patrick Henry delivering his speech against the Stamp Act of 1765 declaring his opposition to King George III.Some of Red Hill's special programs include an annual Naturalization Ceremony; the 4th of July Celebration which features living history re-enactments, music, artisan vendors, food and concludes with a fireworks show; the Bluegrass, Barbecue & Brew Festival; and our annual Christmas Open House. Also, throughout the year, Living History Days are scheduled for school children and home-schoolers from around the nation; this program brings history to life for 2,000 plus children.Patrick Henry's Red Hill is open 362 days a year.

Principal Officer

Mr. Scott Brown

BIO

24 years in nonprofit management and fund development, including working in museums, higher education and healthcare. Attended James Madison University where he had a museum internship at New Market Battlefield. Worked for notable preservation organizations: the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Historic Savannah Foundation. Volunteered as a board and committee member for a number of organizations, including the Southeastern Museums Conference, American Association for State and Local History, Preservation of Historic Winchester, Georgia Association of Museums and Galleries and the South Carolina Federal of Museums.

STATEMENT FROM THE Principal Officer

" One aspect close to my heart at Patrick Henry's Red Hill is the education. We provide hands on living history activities to public, private, and homeschool children of all ages, but primarily ones in the fourth grade. This gives each child the chance to experience life in the 18th century just like Patrick Henry. It is wonderful to see the looks of wonder and joy on the children's faces, and the excitement in their actions. Hope Marstin, Chief Operating Officer"
