Mission Statement

The 100 Black Men of America, Inc. (Charlotte chapter) is dedicated to improving the quality of life in the African American community through the collective resources, abilities and experiences of the members. In developing its programmatic agenda, the 100 Black Men of Charlotte, Inc. recognizes the challenges facing African American youth, and strive to provide leadership and support in addressing these and other critical needs of the Black community. The 100 Black Men of Charlotte, Inc. seeks to: - increase educational opportunities for African American youth; - develop programs to empower youth to succeed academically, culturally and socially; - provide role models for young Black males; and - strengthen community support and involvement for African American youth.

Program 1

The 100's Movement of Youth (MOY) program maintains about 50 mentees annually. They are encouraged to stay in school with the aim of graduating from high school and getting a post-secondary education. Saturday Academies (twice monthly group mentoring sessions), tutorial sessions in the stock market and investing as well as Black History, one-on-one mentoring, the 3.0 Club, job shadowing, and the scholarship program are components of MOY. A Special Education intervention component, the Wimberly Initiative, was started in 2,000 in partnership with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, the Policy Makers Partnership project of the National Association of State Directors of Special Education, and other State and local partners. The purpose is to establish a model program to reduce the number of Black and other minority males classified in certain special education categories. The focus is on 30 boys attending Briarwood Elementary School. Since Briarwood ES is a feeder school to Cochrane MS, the 100 Black Men of Charlotte is now involved in a seamless program for students from first grade through college.
