Helen F Munnerlyn

BIO

Helen Munnerlyn is executive director for Leadership South Carolina, housed at the Clemson University's Sandhill Research Education Center in Columbia, SC. As executive director for more than a decade, she has managed the state's oldest leadership development organization to its current success. In that time, more than 80 percent of the alumni have served on at least one board or commission, 19 currently serve in the General Assembly, 39 serve on city, town or county councils, and many other graduates serve non-profits, schools and faith-based organizations. Munnerlyn has more than 25 years of experience in public and media relations. She was with the SC Department of Commerce for 11 years where she successfully managed communications for economic development, the SC Film Office, Public Railways, Community and Rural Development, the SC Coordinating Council and Aeronautics Division. She served as primary spokeswoman for SC Commerce during Campbell, Beasley and Hodges administrations. In addition, she was instrumental in planning many international and national economic development announcements including: BMW, Siemens, Fuji Photo Film, Michelin, Bridgestone-Firestone, the historic visit of the Emperor of Japan, and openings of SC office in Munich, Germany and Hong Kong. She was selected as a key member of Governor Mark Sanford's MAP Commission to reduce waste in state government. She created and operated the profit-making branch of the South Carolina Press Association, and was a staff member at The Associated Press Columbia SC Bureau for five years.
She is a graduate of the SC Economic Developer's School, Positive Management Leadership program, the Governor's
EXCEL Leadership Institute 2002, Leadership Columbia 1995, Riley Institute Diversity Leaders Institute- Midlands I, Leadership South Carolina 2005, and earned a B.A. in Journalism from USC. She is a member of the S.C. Economic Developers Assoc., SC Assoc. of Non-Profit Organizations, former president of the SC Organization of Government Information Officers, and past officer of the Media Women of South Carolina. She is vice chair of Sustaining Our Seniors of SC, a foundation dedicated to senior issues created as a result of the LSC Class of 2013 class project of the same name in which $100,000 of support was raised for senior hunger awareness. As part of SOS, she serves on the Senior Weatherization Fund to assist senior citizens.
A native of Columbia, she is an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church has four adult children and one grandson. She's the “keeper" of Gracie, a beautiful but temperamental “diva" keeshond.
