In the past year we were active in helping the people impacted by the earthquake, hurricanes and Cholera epidemic. In addition, we enlarged the clinic and school and made large steps toward full scale production of biofuel from Jatropha.

Program 2

Ecole St. Barthélémy

Dedicated to excellence, this school is the only chance poor children from this community have for an education. Most education in Haiti, even public education, costs money, so attending one of the best schools in Northeast Haiti is a blessing for these children. Bethlehem Ministry now supports over 700 children here, and expects this number to increase as we expand our middle school in the coming years.  In the afternoons, the facility is used for adult education.  Many parents of our students are inspired by their children and want to receive an education themselves.  St. Bart's is often the first school they attend in their lives.

Program 3

Clinique Espérance et Vie

Due to conditions inherent in a system of abject poverty, Haiti has the highest infant, under-five, and maternal mortality rate in the Western hemisphere.  With only 60% of the population having access to health care, the average life expectancy in Haiti is just over 61 years.  Because we believe it is unacceptable for us, as members of the human family, to allow our brothers and sisters to struggle under these conditions, in 2009 Bethlehem Ministry created Clinique Espérance et Vie, a health care clinic serving 30,000 residents in northeast Haiti.  Seeing 150-200 patients a week, this clinic is the critical health care component of Bethlehem Ministry’s holistic, multi-project approach to break the cycle of poverty in northeast Haiti.  We are proud to have received recognition by the Haitian Minister of Health as one of the best clinics in northeast Haiti and our staff, comprised solely of Haitian nationals, provides top quality health care to an area where the nearest hospital is an hour away.

Jatrofa Pepinyè

Terrier Rouge is a rural environment where the major work is farming. Over the past several decades, pollution and deforestation have contributed to lower incomes, which in turn have lead to poor farming practices, which have lead to increased pollution and deforestation. At Bethlehem Ministry we seek out and support activities aimed at correcting this cycle.  In 2007 we joined with Jatrofa Pepinyè, an outgrowth of the humanitarian and environmental non-profit, Partner for People and Place.  Together our aim is to perfect agricultural practices which offer new sources of income and, at the same time, have a positive impact on the environment. The Jatrofa Pepinyè project works with small farmers to grow Jatropha curcas and make biodiesel and other products from its seed oil.  Jatropha is a native tree that grows on arid marginal land without irrigation and fertilizer and produces for 40 to 50 years.  Around Terrier Rouge there are thousands of acres of unused land, which are too dry for food cash crops but can grow a strong rural economy with green energy.  Homegrown energy can supply local needs and help Haiti break the stranglehold of imported petroleum.
