Program 1

Lectures, Readings, Conversations

California
Lectures presents live lectures and other speaking engagements by
distinguished, nationally recognized novelists, poets, filmmakers, historians,
and journalists who talk about themselves, their work, and issues of
contemporary culture.
Some of the featured
authors/cultural figures include: Terry Gross (NPR, Fresh Air), Ira Glass (NPR,
This American Life), Norman Mailer, former U.S. Poet Laureates Billy Collins
and Rita Dove, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai, Frank McCourt, and
John Updike.
The presentations take place at the 975-seat Crest Theatre as well as at other arts and non-arts venues in downtown Sacramento.
Our speakers come from diverse backgrounds, offering an array of topics
followed by Q&A discussions
with the audience. Our formats include poetry readings, excerpts from published
works with commentary by the authors, lectures of new works and essays, and
conversational interviews with our guest speakers by local celebrities and
journalists. To reach the broadest possible audience, we work to keep ticket
prices low and affordable.

Program 2

Education & Outreach

The Education &
Outreach program is part of our annual series of speaking engagements by
internationally recognized, distinguished writers and cultural figures who talk
about themselves, their work, and issues of contemporary culture.
Education & Outreach programming serves Sacramento’s underserved
communities in an effort to encourage and inspire reading, writing, and
learning. In the past, our Education & Outreach program brought an author
presentation to underserved students at Sacramento High School, and an author
to Sutter Heart Institute to conduct a workshop for practitioners and patients.
We have also sponsored tickets for clients of the AIDS Foundation, participants
of Sacramento State University’s Student Academic Success program, the
Sacramento Public Library’s tutoring program for English Language Learners, and
the Civitas program at Mira Loma and Rio Americano High Schools. Each year,
California Lectures provides up to 350 tickets–a value of approximately $10,000–to
these causes.

In partnership with Capital
Public Radio, California Lectures records many of its presentations for
broadcast on National Public Radio affiliate stations. This partnership enables
us to provide quality literary programming to a larger audience and outreach to
isolated regions of California and Nevada.

In partnership with
Sacramento State University and hosted by university professors, California
Lectures presents free educational seminars about each of the season's authors.

California Lectures
co-presents the One Book Sacramento program with the Sacramento Public Library
and sponsors the campus-wide One Book program with Sacramento State University.
