Mission Statement

The Adult Learning Center, established in 1986 as the Literacy Council of Williamson County, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of adults in Williamson County, Tennessee, through free programs that empower clients to develop reading, writing, conversation and math skills.

Past Year1)Successfully initiated, sponsored and executed Breakfast for Literacy for community leaders and activists to promote community awareness of the literacy needs of Williamson County adults and to solicit funds to continue programs through newly created "membership drive".2) Donated hundreds of paperback books to Williamson County Jail and directly supported GED/HiSet preparation for inmates with materials, tutors and paying HiSet test fees.3) Sponsored and executed formal High School Equivalency"graduation" ceremony for those in Williamson and surrounding communities.4)Supported Life Long Literacy for older adults through book clubs, Reflections program ( a story-telling collaboration between teens and assisted living residents) and by providing audio books and reading materials and annual holiday caroling event.5)Worked with clients in areas ranging from English as an alternative language, Adult Basic Education (5th - 8th-grade level), High School Equivalency test preparation, programs for older adults to Community College entrance exam preparation. Current Year1) Rebranded the Williamson County Literacy Council as the Adult Learning Center to better reflect the function and services of the organization. (see attached media release) Reorganized office and classroom space to better accommodate the varied needs of clients and volunteers and provide flexible learning spaces.2) Added two part-time staff members to work individually with student clients and volunteers to effectively target and address the evolving needs of students and surrounding businesses. 2) Successfully sponsored and executed second annual Breakfast for Literacy hosting community leaders and activists to promote community awareness of the literacy needs of Williamson County adults and to solicit funds to continue adult learning programs.3)Board of Directors ongoing commitment to refine and support strategic plan for organizational sustainability. (currently in progress) 4) Evaluation of existing programs to analyze value-add and ensure alignment with overall organization strategy (e.g., ESL, Adult Basic Education, GED tutoring and graduation, book clubs, special-needs reading programs, etc..) (currently in progress) 4) Establish and nurture new relationships critical to the advancement of Adult Learning Center fundraising efforts and in support of self-sustainability.

Adult Basic Education

The Adult Learning Center works with clients to increase their adult basic education skills, characterized as an academic level up to fifth grade. * Needs of adult basic education students are best served through customized support in a one on one or small group setting, as currently provided by the Adult Learning Center tutors. Clients are matched with tutors whose skills and availability match individual client needs. * Services include pre-testing, follow-up testing, progress assessments, and necessary materials, such as workbooks, magazines, test preparation materials, and supplies. * Adult education services provided by partner agency, Project Learn, begin at the fifth grade academic level. Adult Learning Center receives student referrals from Project Learn to prepare students who are not yet learning at the fifth grade level or who may require additional support to succeed above this level. Adult Learning Center also refers students to Project Learn who would benefit from instruction in their program.

High School Equivalency Support

The Adult Learning Center provides support to adult clients who are working toward high school equivalency certification, as adopted by the State of Tennessee. * Often high school equivalency students have education needs best served through customized support in a one on one or small group setting, as currently provided by the Adult Learning Center tutors. Clients are matched with tutors whose skills and availability match individual client needs. * Services include pre-testing, follow-up testing, progress assessments, HiSET (high school equivalency test) exam fees, and necessary materials, such as workbooks, magazines, test preparation materials, and supplies. * The Adult Learning Center holds an annual graduation ceremony to celebrate the accomplishments of those students who have achieved high school equivalency in the previous calendar year. * The Adult Learning Center works in partnership with Project Learn, which provides formal courses for high school equivalency certification and refers clients to Adult Learning Center who need additional personalized support to best succeed in this process. The Adult Learning Center also refers clients to Project Learn for assessment and placement at the appropriate learning level.

The Adult Learning Center provides additional support some college-bound adults may require prior to entering college, as identified by standardized tests, such as the ACT Compass or the Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

Functional English

The Adult Learning Center works with adult clients to increase their functional English skills, characterized as basic language skills necessary to function in daily activities within an English-speaking community. * Clients with little or no English language skills benefit from customized support in a one on one or small group setting, as provided by Adult Learning Center tutors. Clients are matched with tutors whose skills and scheduling availability meet client needs. * English conversation practice in an informal setting provides clients with additional opportunity to use and master these skills. The Adult Learning Center offers English conversation classes four times per week, offering clients the flexibility to attend as convenient with their schedules. * The Adult Learning Center works in partnership with Project Learn Adult Education, which provides formal courses for English language acquisition and refers clients to Adult Learning Center. The Adult Learning Center provides customized support, as detailed above, to those who need additional assistance to best succeed in this process.

Ms. Rita Dozier

BIO

Rita Dozier has a B. A. in English and 30 years experience in adult education including a combination of public school system experience and as the Executive Director of the Williamson County Literacy Council (DBA Adult Learning Center). She is a trained Slingerland instructor, and this knowledge of learning disabilities and methods of teaching has proven essential to adult education students who require additional help improving their academic and basic math, reading and writing skills. Through her dynamic personality, communication skills and dedication to helping those in need, Rita has developed a strong network of resources to support adult learning. Rita is an exceptionally skilled collaborator and community activist.

"After 25 years with the Literacy Council, I believe the most important and unique part of our program is providing individualized service, discovering each person's needs, strengths, desires, and goals. Each student leaves our office with the knowledge that he/she has been heard and that we will try to enable and empower him/her to achieve his/her goals. A student's heartfelt words of appreciation, smile and the frequent hug are my motivation to keep doing what I do. Literacy is just not my job; it is my passion."
