Mission Statement

Marin Organic is an association of organic producers (and their supporters) in Marin whose livelihoods are based on a respect for nature, community well being and a sense of place. We understand the ecological, social, and economic importance of bringing the field closer to the table. That’s why we strive to continually improve farming practices in Marin; to promote the ethical, creative, and patient enterprise of sustainable organic agriculture; and to encourage a preference for locally produced food.

Program 1

The Marin Organic School Lunch and Gleaning Program

Every week, Marin Organic staff and volunteers visit a Marin Organic member farm to glean produce that would otherwise be left in the field. Marin Organic delivers this food to public and private schools and low-income resource centers in Marin County. To date, our School Lunch and Gleaning Program has added more than 140,000 pounds of free, certified organic potatoes, squash, kale, cucumbers, carrots, zucchini, lemons, meat, eggs, yogurt and milk to the lunches of Marin schoolchildren. This unique program earns local producers nearly $40,000 annually. By supplementing Marin County schools’ weekly orders of local, organic food with gleaned products, the Marin Organic School Lunch and Gleaning Program enables 10,000 students to choose nutritious, local food options every week, and helps schools keep to very tight budgets.
