What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
All of our programs and services are free of charge to families and there are no membership fees. 1. Facilitate peer-to-peer support and family matching. 2. Deliver care packages to South Florida pediatric heart patients undergoing heart surgery at area hospitals. Packages include a condition specific doll called a Heart Shadow Buddy(tm) along with gas cards, meal cards, and other miscellaneous items as needed. 3. Provide limited financial assistance. 4. Quarterly social events that bring CHD families together, promote community awareness and raise funds to support our mission. 4. An annual awareness campaign titled "Miles and Millas - Heart Shadow Buddies(tm) Spreading Hope and Encouragement to Families Affected by Congenital Heart Defects"
Hospital Visiting/Care Package Program
A monthly hospital visiting program to three area hospitals to deliver care packages to families. Families receive information on organization's free programs and services. This regular monthly outreach program gets our information out to the families during a very critical time and assists us in identifying those families needing additional financial assistance or other resources. Package includes:
(Heart Shadow Buddies are a registered trademark of the Shadow Buddies Foundation, from which we purchase the Shadow Buddies.)
Financial Assistance Program
The hospital stay of a child with a complex heart defect undergoing open heart surgery is at least two weeks or even a couple of months. This presents an incredible financial strain on many of the families who may have to travel daily back and forth to the hospital to visit and care for this child. In some instances there isn't hospital housing--i.e. Ronald McDonald House--in which the family can stay close to their child. Angel's Pediatric Heart House seeks to assist families with some of the added financial expenses when a child is in the hospita such as--lodging, meals and travel. In addition, these added expenses can cause a family to fall behind on a rent or utility bill or may require assistance with a medical deductible.
Big Hearts Big Adventures Family Fun Days
The Big Hearts Big Adventures Family Fun Days program is a quarterly free events/activities program for CHD families. Many CHD families are unable to organize and pay for a family outing due to their financial challenges. The family fun days help bring CHD families together in a nonmedical, fun environment fostering networking and peer-to-peer support amongst parents. This is also an opportunity for the heart child to see other children like them with physical scars and know that they are not alone. It's important to recognize that when there is a child with a life threatening illness in the family, siblings may often feel left out and neglected. We strive to make siblings feel that they too are important.
Mommy & Me Mini Adventure
The Mommy & Me Mini Adventure is a program (launch date Fall 2010) for mothers with CHD newborns to age two. The program is to be facilitated by a Child Life Specialist in a venue that is child friendly with a private room in which to hold the Mommy & Me class. Child care will be provided for siblings under the age of five not attending school. The purpose of this program is to bring a group of mothers (no more than seven at a time) together to play and bond with their infants while giving them the opportunity to share experiences and challenges of caring for a heart child. The program seeks to assist mothers in creating a network of support to help them cope with the everyday challenges of caring for their child.
