Girls Incorporated of Metropolitan Dallas inspires all girls to be Strong, Smart and Bold.  Girls Inc. is the champion for all girls and young women that for over 40 years has provided effective life skills and enrichment programs to empower girls daily to take charge of their lives. We provide learning and development opportunities designed around personal effectiveness, academics, and career planning so that girls are inspired to be strong, smart and bold and lead successful, independent and fulfilling lives.

Our four campuses located in West Dallas, South Dallas, North Oak Cliff, and Love Field currently have the capacity to provide quality programs for approximately 800 girls, ages 6-18, through after-school programming during the school year, and all day programming in the summer months. We seek to serve all girls age 6-18. Of those members attending the four campuses, 61% live in a single parent home or with neither parent; 85% reside in homes with family incomes of less than $25,000 a year; and 69% are African-American, 30% are Hispanic and 1% are White.

Our overall method and strategy includes curriculum that focuses on the following seven core areas identified as critical to addressing the challenges faced by all girls: educational enrichment, health and sexuality, self reliance and life skills, career and life planning, sports and adventure, leadership and community action, and culture and heritage. 
 
The effectiveness of the curriculum can be clearly seen through successful statistics and measurable results. Ten out of the last eleven years, 100% of girls in the program have remained pregnancy and drug free. Additionally, over the past eleven years, 100% of senior girls in the program have graduated from high school as well as gone on to some form of higher education pursuits.

Program 1

Educational Enrichment/Counseling

Tutoring, Mentoring and Counseling reinforces the importance of education and lifelong learning through daily homework assistance, computer skills, reading, literacy and scholarship assistance.
Science, Math & Technology: Operation SMART provides opportunities for girls to explore careers in scientific fields while they practice and develop math and science skills. Corporate and community volunteers who mentor girls compliment the program by providing individualized support, guidance and role modeling. Hands-on projects, field trips and experiments increase scientific literacy and numeric skills.
Economic Literacy introduces girls as young as six to basic financial concepts, including money management and investment. The program explores how money affects us locally and globally as it fosters development of the skills needed to be financially self-sufficient.

Career and Life Planning

The Career Action Center enables girls to pursue careers that will provide them with economic autonomy. Girls engage in career exploration exercises, job fairs, job shadowing, college field trips and hear career guest speakers. Girls are also matched with specialized mentors in their specific fields of interest.
NFTE Summer Biz Camp focuses on how to improve academic, business, technology and life skills through entrepreneurship education and writing a business plan.
The Young Women's Company activities improve girls' academic, business, technology and life skills through entrepreneurship activities.

Self Reliance and Life Skills

Project Bold helps strengthen girls' abilities to lead safer lives. Through innovative programs in a non-threatening and supportive environment, girls develop strategies on physical self-defense skills and verbal assertiveness training. Girls seek out and talk with caring adults about personal violence and advocate on violence issues for girls and young women. Age-appropriate components include Kid-Ability! (Kid Jr.) and Action for Safety.
Project STRONG teaches maneuvers which promote aerobic fitness, raises health levels and combats growing obesity in children including a strong nutritional study.
Media Literacy encourages girls to think critically about media messages and fosters their awareness of the power of the media and its effects on girls.

Leadership and Community Action

Discovery Leadership pairs girls with adult volunteers to develop their capacity to give back to the community by visiting nursing homes, serving food at homeless shelters, providing necessities for those victims of disaster and preserving their physical environment.
Conflict Resolution techniques, skills and the art of negotiation build confidence and self-esteem.

Health, Sexuality, Family Life Education

Health & Sexuality provides age appropriate programs the promote good lifelong health habits. Girls Inc. compliments the parental role.
Preventing Adolescent Pregnancy program helps girls identify ways and reasons to avoid early pregnancy. Our pregnancy prevention programs have been proven by research to delay sexual activity and parenthood.
Health Bridge - (Girls Ages 12-18 ) The primary goal of Health Bridge is to link girls to community health-care professionals and services. Girls are helped to feel more comfortable using community-based health services throughout their teenage years.
Friendly PEERsuasion - (Girls Ages 11-14) is a proven program that builds girls' skills for resisting pressure to use harmful substances such as alcohol, tobacco, household chemicals and other drugs. The two-part substance abuse prevention program teaches girls healthy ways to manage stress and confront peer, media and other pressures. The girls then assume roles as PEERsuaders for younger girls (age 6 to 10).

BIO

From 1983 to 1994, Ms. Palmer served as Executive Director of the North Texas Food Bank and from 1985 to 1993 she served on the Dallas City Council. Past experience includes Head Start Center Director in West Dallas; Health Planner with Texas Area 5 Health Systems Agency; and VISTA Volunteer in Austin, Texas. Ms. Palmer received her Bachelor of Science degree from the Univ. of Minnesota in Education and her Master of Science in Social Work degree from the Univ. of Texas at Arlington with an emphasis in nonprofit agency management and community planning. In 1990, she received the UTA Distinguished Alumna Award. She also received the Maura Award from the Dallas Women’s Center.
