Mission Statement

The mission of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (Meso Foundation) is to eradicate mesothelioma as a life-ending disease. Malignant mesothelioma is a rare cancer of the linings of the chest or abdomen. Asbestos exposure is the only known cause. The Meso Foundation solicits and rigorously reviews applications, and then awards significant grants, for research on the prevention, early detection, and treatment of mesothelioma. Through its web site and literature, its direct communications, and annual Symposium the Foundation provides patients, family members and physicians with hope, encouragement, and information. The Meso Foundation employs a full-time mesothelioma nurse practitioner to help patients navigate their treatments. In addition, the Foundation works to enhance awareness of this disease and to encourage federal funding for research.

The Meso Foundation's Board of Directors and Science Advisory Board include many of the nation's top mesothelioma physicians and researchers. With the assistance of these experts, the Foundation evaluates and provides funding for novel, promising mesothelioma research projects. The Meso Foundation has already awarded $5 million in mesothelioma research grants. We expect to continue to award ten $100,000 grants each year. As our financial support grows, the Foundation will make larger and more frequent grants to continue to stimulate research to develop effective mesothelioma treatments. The Foundation also educates front-line physicians and mesothelioma patients and family members on current mesothelioma treatment options, and works to create awareness of mesothelioma in Washington and the news media in order to stimulate more research funding at the federal level. The Foundation assisted with the first bill in U.S. history specifically calling for federal funding of mesothelioma research and treatment, introduced by Senator Patty Murray on June 18, 2002.
