Scholarship Program

Educational Opportunities, Inc. has helped hundreds of culturally diverse students from Dallas high schools fund their educations at 4-year accredited colleges and universities. While some have gone as far away as Juilliard, Columbia University, and Spelman College, most of our students attend Texas schools.

Scholarship applications are usually from one of the Dallas magnet high schools. These schools tend to have a student body size that permits administrative counseling while fostering a desire for higher education and encouraging family participation in the educational process. Board members of Educational Opportunities, Inc. work closely with school counselors familiar with students’ academic records as well as their personal family and financial situations. Many of our scholarship recipients are the first in their families to attend college. Most come from difficult family situations, and all have part-time work in addition to a full-time high school course load.

Every spring, applications and transcripts from high school seniors are submitted and reviewed by a committee of board members. Candidates are personally interviewed by committee members, and the full committee makes recommendations to the Board of Trustees at its spring meeting. Scholarships are announced at the students’ graduation awards ceremonies. In April, 2014, fourteen students were offered scholarships for their freshman academic year, 2016-2017.

A unique aspect of our program is that Educational Opportunities, Inc. provides a mentor as well as financial assistance to every student. Board members serve as Class Sponsors for each class and maintain communication with students throughout the years we are associated with them. The Class Sponsors often counsel students in such subjects as managing finances, choosing college majors, and balancing their time between work and academic responsibilities. Students are expected to attend two gatherings during the year which are sponsored by the Board to honor and encourage the students.

Another unique aspect of our program is that Educational Opportunities, Inc. commits financial assistance to the students until completion of their undergraduate college degree, provided that they maintain a satisfactory grade point average and pass at least 12 hours per semester. Students are required to submit their transcripts at the end of each semester; if they have maintained their grades and hours, their scholarships renew automatically.
