Mission Statement

Through education and mentoring, I Have a Dream - Houston inspires at-risk youths to dream and empowers them to believe in themselves and succeed. In 1988, IHAD was born when a group of Houstonians joined together to address the social and educational obstacles facing low-income, at-risk, inner-city children. They created the IHAD program model that we still use today whereby a group of 50 students (usually in elementary school) are invited to enter the IHAD program and become "Dreamers." We work with these student Dreamers for 10+ years -- through 12th grade and beyond -- to ensure they will realize their educational dreams.

Program 1

Student "Dreamers" in elementary, middle and high school participate in mentoring, tutoring, academic and extracurricular programs, community service activities, and, after completing high school, are eligible for IHAD scholarships for higher education. Our goal is to match each student with a volunteer mentor (Dream Partner)who spends about four hours a month (usually meeting weekly) working on classroom studies and academic and social skills. Many take active roles in these children's lives, providing guidance and emotional support. I Have a Dream staff visit with the families of our students and also introduce the volunteer tutor/mentor to the family. About 40% of our Dreamers are Hispanic, 60% are African American.
