Overview

Self-reported by organization

Each year, we provide college scholarships,  SMART series seminars and mentoring to a various number of Harris/Ft. Bend County high school juniors in an effort to prepare them to succeed in college. LLSF has a  fellowship fund for scholarship recipients who are already in college and need additional financial assistance in order to graduate. Our College Preparatory Conference reaches out to more than 2,000 high school students, parents, school personnel and community leaders. Panelists from professors to professionals on higher education educate our attendees on the topics of How to Choose a College and Campus Life and Housing, Admission and College Preparation, and Financial Aid/Scholaship Information. Local and National exhibitors and college representatives make themselves available to the attendees and begin forming connections with students.

Program 1

The organization's operating programs inlcude mentoring, student seminars and the College Preparatory Conference. Each scholarship recipient is matched with a one-on-one mentor who works closely with the student from the time the scholarship is awarded, at the beginning of the senior year, until college graduation. All new scholarship recipients are required to attend a series of seminars during the senior year to help them prepare for college. Topics include: how to fill out the college application, where to find additional financial support, and what to expect on campus. We hosted our second College Preperatory Conference January 21, 2005.Our free city-wide conference provided valuable information on how to chose a college;the admissions process; financial aid and campus life/housing.
