Mission Statement

EDUCATIONAL PORTRAYALS OF MOUNTED ARTILLERY UNITS IN USE FROM 1840 THROUGH 1918. CHAS serves all throughout California by conducting civil war living history events, parades and school days to teach the public about mounted horse artillery and all of the aspects of the 1840 to 1918 military life.

The California Historical Artillery Society (CHAS) is the only civilian volunteer horse drawn artillery unit of this kind in the United States. CHAS provides education and demonstrations for school days and public events throughout the state of California. All of our horses are rescued American Standardbred horses rescued from the race tracks when they are to old to continue racing or do not make the cut on the track. We retrain our horses to pull cannons in teams of six, wagons in teams of two, and as outrider horses carrying our units American flag. The horses are kept at Camp Warhorse is located in Salinas CA

SCCWA Battles & Encampment

We are invited by Boy Scout Troop 201 in Southern California to participate in a Civil War Re enactment that supports the troops in that area. Our unit transports 2 cannons, ambulance and escort wagon along with 17 horses supporting this event.

We participate in 2 battles each day (Saturday and Sunday) plus cannon demonstrations, parade and petting zoo for the scouts and public who attend this event.

Ted has been a member of the California Historical Artillery Society since its inception in 1998. He has served as president for the last 15 years. Ted is a professional landscape contractor and a Civil War lieutenant on the weekends.
