Gloria Flora

BIO

Gloria Flora, founded and directs Sustainable Obtainable Solutions (SOS), an organization dedicated to the sustainability of public lands and of the plant, animal and human communities who depend on them. SOS's projects primarily focus on large landscape conservation strategies, climate change action, clean energy and promoting the sustainable production and use of biochar.

Gloria served 23 years in the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), notably as Forest Supervisor on two national forests, including the largest national forest in the continental U.S.. She was a leader in establishing the human dimension as a component of the USFS ecosystem management system. She made courageous landmark decisions to protect the Rocky Mountain Front in Montana from oil and gas development, which evolved into historic protective legislation and the first new wilderness in Montana in 31 years.

Gloria founded and directs the U.S. Biochar Initiative (USBI) as a project of SOS. Biochar fits in the nexus of her work in large landscape conservation strategies, climate change action, forest health collaboratives, public land sustainability and as well as her permaculture passion.

As a certified permaculturist and landscape architect, she brings creativity and sustainable design to the forefront in all her work. Gloria and her husband are growing TerraFlora Sylvanculture Learning Center focused on teaching and demonstrating permaculture principles and design in forested environments.

Gloria's won many awards for leadership and environmental stewardship, including having a new species of a Tanzanian toad named after her: Nectophranoides florae.
