Overview

Self-reported by organization

1. The Scottdale Historical Society, with the help of the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County, secured their own 501C3 and 1023 identities in 2010. 2. They opened up the c1830 Loucks House they own as a bed and breakfast and community meeting place. It was a 6 year totally volunteer effort. They removed clutter from both inside and outside of the abandoned historic property and completely renovated the interior. The decorating scheme is 1880 to 1830 with custom made wallpaper in several areas of the mansion. The property boasts the original spring house - still running! - summer kitchen, carriage house, root cellar, smoke house and mansion. 3. They established a Historic Plaque Program for those properties located within the Historic District listed on the National Registry as well as those properties outside the district that are historically significant. 4. An endowment program was established with the 107th birthday of a local supporter to the Society. 5. In 2009 the Society began a benefit auction with the donation of a complete trailer of furniture from Levin Furniture. Levin Furniture has already made the same donation for this years Oct. 30th's auction. A local business man has donated a downtown storefront as a site to accept donations from the community for this auction. The focus for this year is on continuing the growth of the Society by making the Loucks House self sustaining, growing the endowment program, expanding the volunteer base, enlarging the board, looking at a management team of staff (paid and or volunteer) with a goal of opening a museum to preserve the many items received from the community.

Bed and Breakfast

The Scottdale Historical Society owns the original c.1830 Loucks Homestead, located within walking distance to downtown shops. The Society decided to open it in 2010 as a bed and breakfast and community meeting place so that the property could be self sustaining and a more publicly visible reminder of historic preservation. It took 6 years of 100% volunteer effort and financial support from the community to bring this wonderful old vacant property back to life. It was rezoned and now boasts custom made wallpapers, top of the line bedding, updated plumbing, new electrical service and a new heating system. .

Program 3

Christmas House Tour

The first Sunday in December is the Christmas House Tour. Although it serves as a fundraiser for the Historical Society, it is also a way to showcase some of the wonderful old architecture in town. Along with costumed docents and some Dicken's type carolers, it takes you back to the turn of the century. The Society researches and provides the homeowners on the tour with a house history that is shared with the people visiting the home. There are usually 6 to 7 homes on the tour and they are often within walking distance of each other. Refreshments are served at the Loucks House.

Funding Needs

The Scottdale Historical Society is suffering growing pains. They are actively working towards board expansion and volunteer recruitment as priorities in the coming year. Much discussion revolves around the need for management of the Loucks House as it opens for community use. The Society also owns a grand old mansion located within the historic district. This group of committed volunteers is working towards long term goals of both properties as they grow the board and volunteers. The Loucks House is in need of two additional bathrooms, a more chef friendly up to date kitchen and some outside carpentry on the façade. There are three working bathrooms, two were left intact but the plumbing and wiring were brought up to code. The third was completely gutted and now includes an old claw tub and pedestal sink. The estimates are $10,000 for each bathroom we would like to add. They were small kitchenettes prior to being gutted in preparation as bathrooms.. The kitchen is a good size but very outdated. The local Kiwanis donated a new commercial Vulcan range and commercial refrigerator in 2009. The layout does not work for catering events at the mansion and is in dire need of new cabinetry and stainless steel sinks and a dishwasher. Estimates are $10,000 to $15,000. The mansion and the outbuildings are brick and in very good condition. However; the wood on the rooflines is deteriorating in several places as well as a very decorative and functional second floor balcony that looks out over the town. Informal bids are approximately $15,000. The outside property is in need of a professional painter. It is a very high property and requires a skilled painting contractor. The job would require lots of caulking and sealing as well as small repairs. The current estimate is $18,000 and includes all materials
