Mission Statement

The mission of CTNS is to promote the creative, mutual interaction between theology and the natural sciences. The CTNS mission is carried out through three program areas: research, teaching and public service. The central scientific focus of these programs is on physics, cosmology, evolutionary biology, and genetics, with additional topics in the neurosciences, technology, the environmental sciences, and mathematics. The central theological focus is on Christian theology, ethics and spirituality, with additional attention to the theological issues arising from the engagement between the sciences and world religions.

Program 1

CTNS encourages discussion and research, as these fields are rarely bridged. CTNS offers accredited courses at the Graduate Theological Union, designed to prepare future generations of church leaders and scholars for theological vocations in scientific culture. CTNS, a membership organization, also publishes CTNS e-News and "Theology and Science, a peer-reviewed journal of scholarly articles and book reviews. The organization also sponsors the J.K. Russell Fellowship conference, the Charles H. Townes Graduate Student Fellowship and other research and events. One of CTNS's accomplishments was conducting a three year research Project on Ethical and Theological Implications of Human Genome Project, funded by the National Institutes of Health. CTNS also managed SSQ: Science and the Spiritual Quest international program and the Science and Religion Course International Program. CTNS is current running "Science and Transcendance Advanced Research Series" (STARS) which awards significant research fellowship of $100k to each of five research teams.
