Mission Statement

In some of the most challenging environments, WiRED is often the sole source of updated health care and medical information for doctors, medical students and average people. For example, WiRED: * Provides HIV/AIDS information in Kenya to to over a million people * In Iraq, WiRED has installed over 30 Medical Information Centers and four video conferencing facilities over the past five years. * Update medical practices and provide comprehensive, contemporary medical resources in post conflict countries such as Bosnia, Montenegro, Croatia, Nicaragua and Serbia. * Provide modern educational resources for children in schools and orphanages in Montenegro, Bosnia, Croatia and Sierre Leone. * With the Information Telemedicine Network bring crucial medical information to the poorest countries in the world. *Develop medical stored medical content programs for areas the Internet does not reach.

* In Kenya, 18 Community Health Information Centers in urban and rural areas and a Medical Information Center at the University of Nairobi School of Public Health deliver a vast collection of health and medical information to more than 9,000 individuals each month. * WiRED established four Medical Information Centers in Iraqi teaching hospitals shortly after the war was declared over in 2003. Recently, an additional six Centers were installed in other teaching hospitals. * Three Medical Information Centers in Central American Countries were installed in 2008: in Nicaragua, Honduras and El Salvador. These centers serve doctors and people within a 75-mile radius.

Dr. Gary Selnow

BIO

Dr. Selnow is a professor of communication with the Marian Wright Edelman Center at San Francisco State University and Executive Director of WiRED International. Dr. Selnow was awarded San Francisco State University's Presidential Medal for Humanitarian Service in May 2004 by President Robert Corrigan. He is the developer of High Definition Research, a technique that amplifies the role of the respondent in public opinion research. Selnow aired occasional commentaries on Public Radio International's Marketplace program. Selnow is the author/coauthor of seven books including Society's Impact on Television and High Tech Campaigns. Electronic Whistlestops is his latest book about the use of the Internet in American politics. He is authored a book with Croatian journalist, Stjephan Malovic, on the role of the press in the former Yugoslavia, and he is writing Through Washington's Back Door, a book about use of the Internet in political communication. Selnow was twice a Fulbright Scholar, first in Austria and most recently at the University of Zagreb in Croatia. He has lectured at the London School of Economics, the University of Warsaw, the Free University of Amsterdam and other universities in Europe. He coordinated a national communication program for a White House task force and served as a research methodologist for the U.S. Information Agency. He was a reporter for Greater New York Radio and a consultant for NBC Television and the National Academy of Sciences. Selnow was a pilot and information officer for the U.S. Air Force. He consulted for industry and nonprofit organizations. Selnow received his bachelors degree in technical writing at Rutgers University and his masters and doctoral degrees in communication at Michigan State University.
