Program 1

IT Hardware, Software and Company Databases

Historians of technology and culture are starting to write the history of the IT age, yet much material on which this history will be based is being lost: Entrepreneurs, engineers, and venture capitalists are not known for having an interest in preserving the history of their own activities. The IT History Society is seeking funding to help us complete three databases: all computing hardware ever built, all computing software ever written, and all information technology companies that have ever existed. The databases will be free, ongoing sources of information about the IT industry for historians, educators, technology companies, journalists, hobbyists, and the general public. We have created the structure of the three databases, two of which are visible at ithistory.org; we estimate that when up-to-date, there could be 120,000 entries total (compared with 21,400 entries in all three together as of 04/11/13).

Many IT oral histories and archives are stored around the world. In this database, anyone will be able to post a story about an IT company, hardware, software or a person. Stories will be linked to the database entries about the companies, hardware, software, or individuals on the IT Honor Roll.
